nano skimmer

Got a nano skimmer for my 30 gal seahorse tank-haven't really gotten past the "run-in phase"yet but now it's producing copious clear foam that just keeps filling up the collection cup every few minutes! We took everything apart and put it back together-didn't seem to be any problems. We adjusted the blue screw looser-tighter,etc but to no avail. Its been doing this all day.Any ideas?BTW my wavebox and regular skimmer in my reef tank are working great-thanks again Roger!! cherie

I'm on the same boat.... I thought it was just going through a break in period, but this went on for a good month+. I played around with the skimmer and i think it has to do with the hole where the air screw goes. In the INNER LIP of the upper lid, where the air screw goes, you can feel the air getting sucked in when the skimmer is on. I'm guessing that's where the problem lies, I'm still trying to find out from Roger of Tunze. I'm guessing the hole is too big or something. I placed a piece of tape there so whatever air that is getting sucked in is now coming through the screw side. Putting the tape there seemed to solve the problem. The next day i started to get good dark foam. But i don't know if what i did was right, i just didn't want another day of the skimmer cup filled with water again. So i'm guessing there's some sort of defect with the way the upper lid of the skimmer was made. I've attached the picture of the upper lid. AGAIN it's the hole in the INNER LIP.

Tried it-with the hole 100% blocked nothing happens-with it a tiny bit unblocked it foams over.***?

Cherie , I forgot to add that I had the screw opened up a bit since that's where all the air would be coming from. Try that. Also since your tank is still cycling, I don't know if that's a factor to why you're not getting anything.

Sorry Felix-as I type acceptable skimmer foam is being produced!!Thanks so much-but I'm wondering what went wrong? It's weird cause I love Tunze equipment-but so far almost everything I've gotten from them has had a problem initially-requiring me to either send the product back to them for repair or wait for a replacement part to arrive:( thanks again, cherie

yeah, this is what i figured out. i'm not sure if that inner hole is supposed to be there in the first place. And if it is, maybe it was bored out too big... not sure. Won't know until i hear from Roger again. keep me posted as i will do for you if you hear anything...

The inner hole is supposed to be there. The problem you both are having is that the top plate has a thread that is too large so air is coming in around the screw, the way it is supposed to work is the screw uncovers a hole and the air comes in from the back, with the loose fit the air is coming in around the screw. Cherie, if you PM me I will send a new top plate. The thread is done by hand and rather than 4.9mm he used 5mm and so there is room for air to bypass.

Roger,

I received the top plate on Friday... THANK YOU!!!! The skimmer is working so much better now. But what happened? Why was the thread done at 5mm than what was supposed to be 4.9mm? Thanks again for the AWESOME customer service!

Edwin

The threads are cut by hand, it was simple human error, the same guy cuts threads all day and the holding brackets are 5mm but for the top plates he is supposed to use 4.9mm so the thread is a very tight fit. I saw this same problem over 2 years ago and I was alarmed it came back but apparently what happened was some old plates that were supposed to have been reground and recycled were brought back up to the production room, so it was a mistake that happened once and just came back to haunt us by unfortunate circumstances.
