Near disaster - overflow

So last night the lady and I got back from dinner with friends. The first thing we always do is walk over to the tank and check things out. I happened to notice that the water was touching the top of the glass covers and looked at the overflow.

It was "working" but barely. I was able to shut off the pump and get the siphon going full bore again, but now I'm nervous....

What would have caused this?

It's a 75g, so today I'm shopping for a 90g rr for a direct swap. Where's the best place to go? Or should I just get a 90 and do a gl*******s overflow? I'm wondering if my DIY stand will work with the rr tanks since the holes are on the bottom.

No idea about what your diy stand plans are but if it's 2x4 frame, you may have issues with the drain/return plumbing.

Too little info.

I had a hob overflow on my old tank, and it would lose its siphon often. I would never sump a tank that is not drilled again.for now I would take everything and give it a solid cleaning that always made mine perform better.

If the drain was working well and now its not, look for debris or air pocket somewhere in the drain portion of the loop.

Vapor Lock. Happens in the Petro-Chem industry all the time. Are any portions of the plumbing on an incline? Check with a level.

As far as the question on where for a tank, I searched for months when looking for a 120 rr and TRS had the absolute best prices on marineland rr's

what brand overflow failed?

Lifereef and Amiracle won't stall ever. There are knockoff HOB overflows that mimic their designs.

CPR overflows are well known to fail- I would recommend avoiding them.

I used to use a HOB one for my 75g and never had any issues. Not sure if I still have it laying around anywhere

good to hear disaster was averted though

Got a 75g black trim (I hate the oak trim on the one I have now) for $118 at petworld in greece.

Just painted the back and will be drilling tomorrow.

what brand overflow failed?

It was an eshopps overflow. Honestly had no problems with it up until that point. Just gonna go with the safe route now and put a glass-holes overflow in it.

I have two HOB overflows (up for sale very shortly!), but swapped the other for a drilled setup on the 40b. Drilled = rest easy at night.

The last time that I ordered from glass-holes the order came very quickly.

Yeah, same here. Unfortunately no shipping today and I leave on Thursday for vacation. I emailed mike @ glass-holes and he gave me the info on the quick shipping. It's gonna cost more than the overflow. Just wondering if someone local has one first before pulling the trigger.

Want to get this wrapped up before I leave so the fish-sitters don't have to worry about it. Oh and I'm sure I'll worry myself nuts if I left it as is.
