New 6095

Ok, so I couldn't wait as I sold my old pumps sooner than I thought and I've bought 2x6095 and 1x7096 controller.

A question Roger, I hooked this lot up and the pumps are quite noisy in the wave function, they make quite a loud tick tock tick tock sort of noise as they go on and off, never thought it would this loud, is this just becuase they are new and this should eventually quieten?

Also having a hard time getting a good wave going in the tank, and flow lacks a little through the tank. this is where i've placed the pumps...

I agree that they do make a tick tock when they go on off. Previously I had them hooked up to run constantly so didn't hear it. But now I just hooked them up to an APEX and when running from 0-100 at 20V I hear the tick tock. Sometimes its loud. Sometimes its quiet. I'm not sure why.

I only had one pump before but bought another one. The other one sounds the same. I thought maybe I just got a bad pump?

I'm going to give it some more time to break in.

Keep in mind wave flow is not a good flow on its own, it is useful in addition to a directional current but as the only source of flow it is not very useful. A wave lacks any direction, it is a back and forth washing which lifts detritus but does not really circulate the water particularly well. The pumps generally do get quieter in the first 2 weeks of operation but they will likely continue to make some noise in wave mode. The timing is critical to a good wave and you may get a bigger wave with the pumps opposing each other and using inverse timing.

Thanks Roger. I did get a wave going and noticed it doesn't have a great affect on the flow within the tank as you have mentioned.

I had a problem with one of the pumps, I came down to notice it wasn't working and on closer inspection the propeller/shaft had come forward out of its seat/housing and the propeller front was touching the grate (good thing it was on)...any idea how or why this happened?

Did the metal shaft come out or just the propeller assembly with magnet?

I think it was only the propeller assembly with magnet, as I didn't take the pump out of the tank, just sort of pulled the front grate off and pushed it back in.

i dont think you are supposed to run tunze pumps below 30% when running on any controller. Roger will confirm this, but when running on a controller, pulse it from 30-100% it will prevent any clicking/reverse rotation.

When selecting the wave function the tunze controller automatically sets the power from 0-100% itself and you can't change it, so they can be run under 30%.

Anyway, Josh, my pumps have quietened down quite a bit, only took a day for the knocking sounds to go, so quite happy.

I think it is just a break in issue and you should be fine now. My guess is some air trapped in the pump caused the rotor to come forward and bind.

I think you're right, as I did notice some bubbles being forced out around the magnet drive unit, so lets just hope it was that. Thanks Roger.

Not sure if I should ask here or the APEX forum, but then I'm wondering if my programming is ok for my pumps. I set them to pulse so MIN is 0 and MAX is 100. Would that be acceptable?

NO.
as stated, you should either have the pump at 0 (off) or pulse between 30%-100%
i have 2 tunze pumps pulsing from 30%-100% and it creates a nice wave with good back and forth motion in my 8" 240gal tank. (you should see my frog spawn move!)


if you run the pump below30%, it will not move enough water through the pump to cool it and can create problems with the pumps.

pulsing form 30-100 will create the same, if not better wave then 0-100 and you wont get the chatter noise or the reverse start and bang of the impeller on the front grill.

Oh, and i run a AC3 with the Neptune AquaSurf module.
so i know it will do what is needed.

Does this apply to any of the output voltages on the power supply? I believe the power supply has 5 output voltages.

Yes, since the lower power at the power supply lowers the wattage and heat produced, it is OK to lower this and the speed.

Hi Roger,

I changed the volatge jumpers in the transformer from the 20v to the 24v and it doesn't seem to increase the flow, infact it seems less. This isn't right, is it?

I will take the pump out of the tank and test it more thoroughly to make sure what I'm saying is right, but I can tell that when the jumper is changed it doesn't seem to have the right affect from the flow I see in the tank...any thoughts?

Is there a recommended voltage for LPS/Softie tank? I have 2 , one on each side of a 48x24x20 (lwh) tank.

An odd bad jumper is not impossible, they are just a resistor, it would be interesting to know if the 24V one is bad or the 20V, if you go through the other sizes to you see a linear increase and is 24V stronger than say 18V?
