New 630gal SPS Peninsula, NJ

What????? its not 800g anymore???? I'm not going to follow this now....LOL. I think you can pm one of the mods for the large tank forum and ask that they edit the name of the thread.

I looked at your design and it looks great....cant think of anything to change. If you posted this already in the thread I apologize for asking it again but what is your intended equipment list?

800gal was over my budget :) I had to go with 96" long

Equipment is not set yet :) So far I will get the stand and the tank inside my house before we finish it. And then in about 3 months I'll start working on it, hope with all reefers from RC :)

In a few minutes I'll post few pics what I have now and what will go to a new house soon.

My tank and LED lights (2012 ReefTech) that will go to a new tank, just have to buy 3 more lights

Glad things worked out for you. That's still no small tank by any means.

Can't wait to see this progress.

I'm glad I didn't buy the other one, but I was close to making a deal :-) .building of this tank will start in a few months but in the meantime will start to collect all the equipment.

Sounds like it's going to be a great build. I love that I didn't rush mine. Setting everything up and thinking it through for a few months as to how it's going to run and be maintained is so important. I'm sure you'll change your mind on a few things a couple hundred times before it's got water in it though.

I'm already not sure about closed loop design I got. So I am thinking about doing about 4 holes only in the middle across of the bottom, so I can hide it in the rocks. That the only one thing it bothers me now, or I get rid of it at all and use Tunze wavemakers or MP60

Closed loop will definitely be the cheapest up-front purchase and installation, but on-going electrical usage will burn a hole in your wallet to run such powerful pumps. Also, take into consideration that those external pumps create a lot of heat, and you may need to run a chiller more often than necessary. I know it's a peninsula tank and you don't want powerheads coming off all the panels. MP60's are also a lot of flow in one spot when dialed all the way up. You may want to use mroe MP40's on the overflow box side alternating pulses throughout the tank at different depths. Many people say this can't be done in such a long tank but I've seen it work very well.

For instance...

Take note that this is a 10 foot long and 5 foot wide tank that is 3 feet high (1200 gallons). Granted, that's $3,200 in Vortech pumps, but at that size of a tank the electrical savings from closed loops is saved pretty fast. It appears the reef is thriving. I notice there is no obstruction in the path of the Vortech pumps the entire length of the tank on both long sides of the penisnsula. I'm assuming you won't be piling rock near the wall either since you'll be viewing it from 3 sides as well. I remembered this tank, and thought I'd forward it along. You may be able to get away with 4 MP 60's on the overflow side, but I'm pretty sure that it will kick up some serious sand storms drawn into the propellers and strewn across the reef.

Amazing tank! Still confiused with flow in my tank! I will call Derek from Miracle Aquariums and talk to him about it, will see what he is going to say?

If it's going to have a canopy, I see no reason why a pvc pipe couldn't be run up in the canopy the length of the aquarium and then come down into the water on the far side. Then you could load up on Vortechs or Tunzes on the overflow side and fight the current of one strong return pump. That way, your clean, filtered water would be entering the tank from the side without the overflow box but coming down from up in the canopy and a Locline fitting to increase the flow. This way you'd still be getting strong flow from the side that's viewable. I don't even think it would siphon down to the sump when the pump is turned off either because of the height above the water that it would have to travel at force.

HTH

I was all set to go with a closed loop and then after talking with paul at oceans motions I decided against it for two reasons.....Paul told me to do it the right way I would need to set up two separate closed loops which would require two om's and two pumps so that was reason number one and number two was heat concerns from the pumps. I went with tunze 6305's which proved to be way too powerful in my tank the way I had them mounted but would be perfect in a tank like yours and they move a ton of water.

Thanks,
This tank will be in Middletown, I moving out once construction on the house done. Still not far from Old Bridge

My father and I both work for AT&T. He is based out in Middletown, Bell Labs, right near the Best Buy and Home Depot.

Hope there's been some new developments here. I'm doing a smaller 7' peninsula and would love to know what you decided to do for flow.

Hey Adam,
Any new developments with the build?

Nothing since I ordered tank. It will take about 2 months before get it in NJ.
Friend of mine is getting all steel needed for my stand, so that will be build soon.
That will be all for now :) busy with the house

For the flow, after talk with tank manufacturer I decided to stay with closed loop. They said, that what most peninsula tanks are being made, (6 holes on the bottom for return, 2 holes on the overflow side for intake) and return from main pump on the top of the tank - the opposit side (located in the euro bracing)

Any reason you decided to go with Miracles over Atlas? I've been talking with Steve about Atlas as he really liked them, so wondering if you had any input.
