New Bleached Gig

I just purchased this guy today from a LFS who had been treating for the last 7 days. It is really bleached, so i got him a price I could not say no to $55. It does have tints of yellow closer to the mouth and the mouth is tight, so I could not get a pic of it especially with the tentacles in the way. While placing in my DT I had a hard time because it was SO sticky. Curious to see what color he will actually be. It is about 6" currently and high in the tank with intermittent flow from my MP40 on reef mode. Using 400w Halide Radium 20k's

Thanks. I woke up this morning and hasn't moved and still looks good, sticky and mouth closed shut. When I fed the tank this morning and my other nems I put a small krill on the gig and he ate it up without hesitation.

You might want to hold off on target feeding it for a bit, couple weeks to a month.

I actually think the opposite. Severely bleached nems don't have a healthy zoox population -- it's the zoox that provide the nem nutrients by converting light into sugar and amino acids, and without zoox the nem could potentially starve without food.

I have a bleached gig and have been feeding it heavily. As the zoox population returns, I plan to feed it less often.

I find that carpet nems just need 2-3 days of acclimation before feeding instead of the traditional wait a week before feeding a new anemone rule. I've noticed that those Haddoni and Gig anemones that I fed just a few days after introduction had responded better than the ones I did not feed sooner. So I agree with you.

I now have three little gigs in the same tank, and I feed them all at the same time. They always perk up right after feeding. It could be that the small ones need lots of food to grow.

hhmmm. so, you do recommend feeding. Its been 4 days and it has not moved, deflated or showed a gaping mouth. should the feeding be daily, every other, weekly? and what type of food should I give it?

Day 4 hasn't moved and seems to be doing well. He has expanded more since Saturday and looks to have settled in.

I plan on doing my water change tomorrow, but am afraid to due to the fact that the water will be drained about 7" under the gig exposing him to air. I will keep salinity and temp the same. Will this have negative affects on him?

Looking good. You got to support his tissue when he is out of the water or he may tear something. Can you move the rock until you fill the tank with water? Can you just remove water from the sump?

Thanks Minh. I did the water change and he was out of the water for only a few minutes. His body laid on the rock he is currently on. he seemed stressed as all my corals do when I do a water change. I will check him once it settles in again.

As long as his body is laying on the rock he will be fine.

Day 7

Day 7 looks to be coloring just a tad and taking up more of the rock he is perched on. yellowish tints on some of the tentacles and still has not deflated or shown gaping mouth. I have been feeding it since day 4, krill about the size of an eraser head and he has been gobbling it up with out any issues.

looks really full and tentacle extension is great. no signs of illness. I have been feeding everyday since day 4. looks like you can see a tinge of yellow/green on tentacles and each day seems to be getting more.
