new Blue and Tan Gig

Long story short yesterday I went to checkout a new LFS I've been hearing good things about recently. Walked in to find they had gotten a bunch of anemones in the day prior. They had 8-10 gigs on various colors mostly bleached badly and with stubby tentacles in a tank with a bunch of crispas, btas etc. A smaller beige gig stuck out to me looking healthier than the others. Nice shaggy looking tentacles, mouth closed and it was supporting itself well showing the folds etc I see in pics of gigs. I couldn't help myself so I took it home. Not a planned purchase and I don't have cipro on hand but hopefully got lucky with a healthy nem to start.

After a 45 minute drip acclimation and a quick re scape of my 60 cube in it went.

This is maybe an hour later. What I thought was a brown anemone looks mostly blue under my LEDs. Not quite as blue as this pic makes it looks though rather it's mostly a tan color with the top of each tentacle being blue.

It hasn't moved from when I initially placed it and continues to look ok. Have not seen it deflate.

Feel free to confirm this isn't a Helianthus for me or comment if you think it may be - it was simply labeled carpet anemone but the tentacles confirm the gigantea imo but I am no expert

Definitely Gig. I'd look to get Cipro asap in case it does go downhill.

Yes, definitely a gig, and a very nice one at that. Having Cipro on hand is definitely good advice. These nems tend to look better when introduced, then go down hill quickly. However, yours looks better than most newly imported gigs.

Thanks for the confirmation. I know better than to think I'm out of the woods just because day 1 went well. Usual advice is not to feed them at first right? I'm curious to see what my clowns are going to do. They left their bta to check out the new nem right away but didn't go in just swam near it and slept in the bta as usual.

I actually found a local reefer that has some but I am not well setup to treat. (cant make new water quickly and am not currently home often enough to monitor)

It truly is a bummer because I would guess that most of these gigs can be saved with Cipro, especially the ones that looked as good as yours. Can you give it to someone to treat for you? I'm sure you can work out a deal with this person (a few frags for the trouble, maybe?). I'd hate to see this nem die just because you don't have the time to QT it.

For other people who are reading this and are considering getting a gig, you need to have Cipro and a QT tank (10-20 gallon tank, heater, small powerhead, and light) ready go to prior to purchasing the gig. It's a small investment (probably costs about $100 max the for set up) and can be used to QT other new additions to your DT. Prior to Cipro, I would guesstimate that 90%+ of the gigs that entered the trade died within the first month. Consider the QT set up part of a package deal when getting a gig... if you buy a gig you also buy a QT set up. Plus, in terms of economics, it makes a lot of sense. Sometimes these gigs can go for a couple hundred dollars, so the cost of a QT set-up is good insurance, considering how well Cipro works.

There is no reason for treatable gigs to die in the hands of someone who isn't properly set up to acclimate them.
