New blue H. malu from DD.

Just received him today, bag was a bit cold. Floated for 10 min and slowly drip acclimated over about an hour, I dug a hole in the sand for him next to two rocks, placed him in and put a tupperware container over top of him with holes all around. Is he going to attach under the sand or to one of the rocks under the sand? If I have to dig another hole for him, is it ok to cover him with sand (not completely)?

Specs:

NO3: 5-10ppm
PO3: undetectable
Salinity: 1.025
Temp: 77-78
Ca: 450
dKh: 10
mg: 1300
Salifert tests, except mg (elos).

Lighting:
8 bulb 54w ATI Sunpower

He's about 2-3" across when fully open. He was not looking too hot in the bag, but after about 2 hours in the tank he inflated and started to drift around. He has these "radial ridges" where his disk would come up to a ridge and then go back down and then back up to a ridge, almost looking like the way a carpet does. I put the tupperware over him so that he wouldn't get into trouble overnight. Anything else I can do to make sure that he attaches? He's quite a lovely bluish color. Planning on letting him double/triple in size before I get my clowns (orange skunks). Also, do you think they will take to him? If not what are my alternatives?

I will post pics tomorrow.

I had a malu from DD ship to me before and the bag was really cold. Looked terrible in the bag, after acclimating, it died the next day. If it didn't attach by now...I would be very worried. I called LA when I received the anemone so they had on file that I called about the cold bag so I could get a credit if it died.

So I rearranged my rocks and provided him a little cove. He's been there for about 24hrs and looks like he might have attached. He's in lower flow and expanded fully. I'll try to update with pics tomorrow.

Yeah, I want to see pics of it!
Sometimes it takes a little bit to attach, depending on flow and health of nem, and shipping always seems to stress them a bit.
Your skunks will most likely be cool w/ it, and tank specs seem up to snuff.

So since the last update my nem has crawled under a rock pile where it gets partial light and very low flow. It's kind of just sitting there... Not really sure what I should do with it. I'm obviously not going to move it if it's comfortable there, but will it eventually move out into the open when it's ready? I want to start feeding it to bulk it up since it's only about 3 inches in diameter, but it's sitting just so so that I cannot see if it's eating the mysis that I squirt back there...

Advice?

Are you acclimating it to your lights at all?

I like to use 3 layers of window screening (( supported by egg crate )) b/t the lights and the tank, with removing a layer every 5-7 days.

I wasn't light acclimating it, I figured coming from MH's it would be ok... Wrong assumption?

As of now since it's in a cave, should I still put some screens on top, would it make a difference?

Thanks for the reply btw.

If he's hidden I would keep a close eye let him come out on his own.. light acclimating prob wouldn't have been a bad idea to start got to remember totall lights out on shippment.

They are shallow water sand anemones, so bright light should not be a problem - all things considered equal. However I agree with Todd that acclimatization is really important. We have no idea how long it might have been out of bright lighting, even if he was under MH for a short time before he was sent to you.

I'd just give it a few more days, you could shade that side of tank and see if it changes.
You could squirt mysis to it, that is my preference for new nems anyway, small easy to digest.

I've done mysis and some rods food. I've just been trying to leaving it alone. Hopefully it will recover and eventually come out.

I keep saying this but, I hope to update with pics if/when it comes back out.

I appreciate everyone's input and advice. Thanks guys.

I personally don't think anything from DD needs light acclimation unless your lights are super intense LEDs. The DD stuff is all held and observed for weeks and maintained undre MHs. I run AI LEDs and have not lost anything from DD due to not acclimating to light.

I got one too from dd this week, im not convinced its a malu because it has same same tentacle shape as my crispa and its foot attached the same way my crispa did.

I turned off my Vortech and he attached immediately. Rigt next to my green crispa.

From my observations they like to have their foot where the sand and rock meet.

Are they compatible together? I thought they would sting each other being that close.

If my belief is correct they are both crispa. The base on mine showed white coloring and a verracruce like every other crispa i have seen.

Its tentaclez have magenta tips like y crispa.

Anemones of the same species can live closely even in groups

So DD messed up?.. they did that to me last month when I ordered an ORA Green Tip birdsnest and what I got was purple tipped.

Im not saying they messed up these are the two most common confused anemones and it was listed as a malu sebea anemone.

I dont think i have ever seen a true malu for sale.

Im going to reach to kevin kohen the guy who runs live aquaria. I want to know if he can find out their collection location.

Maybe he can chime in here woth some info.
