I wonder how they say the 250w "light" is as efficient as a 400w "light".

Does this mean this fixture uses some "super" IC ballast? Because the "reflector" sure looks matte to me. Not reflective at all.

Is this possible?

I wish it was $425 shipped - I'd buy it. But $560+ is pushing it. It's odd looking, but I kinda like it, despite it being a round pendant/reflector.

These have been around in small quantities for about a year. A LFS in Atlanta has had two of these since MACNA last year and they do put out a lot of light. He also recieved the first LED fixture that joins two of these pendants making it the ELOS Manta Ray. Its a really sharp looking fixture, if you like the euro modern look. He uses these to light his 160XL display in his store. I'm not sure if I have any pictures of it or not, I'll have to see.

This is his store: www.einsteinaquatics.com. He is a sponsor on both the Atlanta Reef Club as well as R2R.

He uses the handle percula on all of the forums. If you have a question concerning them, contact him. He is a really great person to work with.

reefknight, I had known about it, slightly, from the Elos forums, but have never really seen technical photos of it. Nor did I hear of pricing until now.

I really wish it was a little cheaper. I don't think I can afford this light for my new 37g.

If the 250w = 400w (other) then a 150w = 250w (other)? I certainly don't want to fry my corals with excess light. Dimensions on the cube are 24x24x16 (either 16 or 18, I went back and forth, and without digging up the e-mail, I'm just posting an estimate of dimensions).

Jesse, thanks for sharing the link. How much are the Elos bulbs going to retail for? And which "Icecap" ballast is used?

Thanks!

The elos 14k bulbs don't have a retail price to be sold separately, yet. The ballast we use is the standard icecap electronic ballast with the package. You can also order the e-power without bllast and bulb and use most any ballast or bulb that you choose.

I posted in the other thread also, but I will here too, because it has more traffic and maybe some one will know the answer. Did they ever figure out which ballast was used on the Lumenarec II 400w that they made the comparison with? We all know that a different ballast can make a huge difference. I was just curios, because its hard to accurately gauge the results of that test without knowing the ballast they used.

That thread was from a reef club in Italy and was done pretty informally. As a guess, I would say both would be magnetic ballasts as we did similar tests with similar results in our warehouse.

It is a bit misleading when we start talking about efficiency and lighting products. What they are trying to say is that given the exact same bulb and ballast, that this reflector will put MORE light where it needs to go. In other words the reflector is highly optimized and when compared to the average 400W setup, it compares well.

"reflective" surfaces do not have to be shiny to be efficient. The SHAPE and its relation to the light source are critical the performance of a reflector.

eskymick, yes it will cover that aquarium at about 10-15" above the aquarium. The reflector itself is only about 11" wide and the outside of the light spread is very bright so you would have to play around to make sure you don't have too much "bleed over" on the edges of the aquarium if you raised it too high. In the box we include two glass covers, one tempered clear and one tempered frosted glass, so you could also experiment with these.
BrokeColoReefer. Yes it could though it may be nice to have one more for center. Perhaps a 150w in the middle or something like this:

You'd have to see how the bracing on that aquarium would work out but that setup would be a ton of light.
