New filter sock..Grrrrr!

so I finally broke down and bought some new filter socks. I had been using the same one for a year. I would take it out twice a week and clean it by hand, my wife was always complaining (rightfully so) that there was a bowl with bleach and a fish tank thingy sitting on her granite. the plan was to get a weeks worth and just wash them all once a week in the washing machine. well I put a new one in today and KA-BOOM! the skimmer exploded overflowing everywhere. I guess you should clean new filter socks before using them :rollface:

hahahahahaha, i think you just got used to nice hand cleaned socks... i think that happened to me the first sock, and i didn't know what happened...

yea, they are in the washing machine now... how long do I have to go skimmerless?

When that used to happen to me i would adjust the skimmer so it would skim very dry and put it back about a hour later to its original position.

Funny. This happened to me today as well. I've purchased socks from other stores and never had an issue. This one came in a package and I had bubbles everywhere!

unfortunately, I have had the gate valve all the way open since I upgraded my skimmer pump and it had been skimming pretty wet for my tastes even then, about 1/2 gallon a week of tea

the first new sock went in at the same time as the SP3 pump, so i chalked the overrun up to pump break in, this new sock... I figured it out

I wash everything before it goes in my water. You never know what's in it.

How did u wash ur filter socks 556? My mom is worrying if I wash my filter socks in the washing machine, it would ruin it.

just bleach, no soap, 2nd wince warm/warm regular speed, spin dry

I just hose mine off with the hose,with a high power nozzle, first I turn them inside out and get a bunch pods that get caught in it and I put them back in the tank, I get them clean enough,and I dont have to listen to my wife regarding the washing machine

if you use the washing machine don't you have to worry about soap residue from prior washes? I just use the hose as well but a wasking machine would be easier.

we use 2nd wince every time the dilution factor is astronomical

after it is done washing, it fills up with water again, agitates and rinse again, we started doing that when my son was an infant to make sure there was no soap on his skin, and just kept on doing it

I wash them on gentle cycle with 1c bleach. Double rinse using 1/2c white vinegar.

The acid in the vinegar breaks down any residual bleach left in the fibers.

Hang to dry overnight.

Some people buy volume from filterbags.com. I just order them from Marine Depot.
