New Frag Tanks off Basement Sump

I have had my 120 gallon mixed reef with 50 gallon basement sump up for nine months and I was looking to add two frag tanks onto it so my main tank could become a show tank over time. The guys over at A Reef Creation built the tank so I had them come back and install two frag tanks.

Here is what I added:

40 gallon Breeder- For Mixed Frags along with a MP10 to increase flow

10 gallon- Low flow for maxi mini anemones

Three Evil Par 38 Bulbs with 80 Degree Optics. 2-12k, 1-20k. I switched out the optics myself. It was easy. Eight inches above the water.
I have a few test frags in the tanks right now to see how they respond to the lights. The spread looks good right now but I am reserving judgement.

thats an awesome setup for those frag tanks, i really like how the 10 gallon is about and behind the 30 gallon. great job!!

Your set up looks awesome but in picture number 4 I noticed a slight bow in the plywood under the breeder tank. You might want to put some 2x4s under that to reinforce it before it becomes a problem

Thank you for the Replies. I will look into the middle brace. In person you don't see a sag just in that picture.

Day 2- All corals in 40br are fully out (including SPS, palys & duncans. No burned corals... yet). Maxi Minis in the 10 gallon are moving around. I don't know if they like the bright lights but they are more colorful.

The tank system temp took a 4 degree dive since adding an extra 50 gallons so I picked up a 400w heater. We are now running between 77-78. Tank Lights are running a 12pm-6pm, 12am-6am light schedule. 6hr on/off schedule for "alleged" optimal coral growth.

Alterations: I picked up a CB Latz Clown today at the LFS a juvenile black saddle clown. I don't know if they will be able to deal with the 6 on/off schedule.

I finally hooked up a wireless cam that has been around the house for a while so I can keep a eye on the three tanks in the basement.

Lights On-

No Light In the room just night vision (looks pretty good, I put a piece of tape to mark sump water level).

I bought a 6inch flower pot and broke the bottom to make a cave for them and moved the bubble tip from the main tank to the frag tank to see if they will host in it since my breeding false clowns won't.

Here is the hybrid IPAD/IPHONE program I use

I bought them as an indoor/outdoor combo a year ago. They have never given me a problem.

I needed to angle it oddly so I used Velcro, hooks, egg-crate and chain. It was a MacGyver activity.

I use the same indoor cam and Foscam surveillance pro app for my iphone. Nice to be able to check up on things, especially when I hear there a power outage in the area.

Updates 3/8/11-
Just as everything was settling in. I slightly moved the 10 gallon tank. Who knew that glass was super thin. A crack formed at the plumbing and made its way to the opposite side. I lost 1/2 gallon of water on the floor. I was able to save the Latz and the corals in time. I am looking into replacements either a 20L with a thicker glass or another 10g.

Everything is now in the 40BR. The fish have adjusted to the 6hr on/ 6hr off light schedule and are eating. The corals appear to be loving the Par 38's and MP10 but I know it is still early. No burning on browning (yet).

Maxis are in a holding frag container until they get a new home

I have fragged everything in my tank and I am letting them grow.

Rogue Mili- I was worried this one would lose color in the par38 but it is doing well.

War Coral Frags. I think I fragged them right.

Toadstool Frags- I left the base in the tank and cut the top into 12 pieces. They will be in the box for a week until they attach.

Sorry to hear about the 10g breakage - my AGA 10g has 1/8" glass and the 20L has 3/16" glass - I would go with a 20L if you can fit it...good luck.

Oh, and the PAR38's look great!
