New gigantea from LA

The re-coloring is progressing, though a bit slower than expected.
The anemone gets however more green. I have seen that before with corals and the Kessil spectrum seems to promote green.

But I feel it's growing in size due to the one to two feedings of Mysis each day.

I feel, with the Kessil LEDs, it's gonna end up neon green like many of my corals.
The brown patches are still not expanding much, but it is already quite green under blue light.
It is also eating about a cube of Hikkari Mysis per day. It would probably eat more but I don't want to overdo it.

Friday night the anemone decided to move.
It either didn't like the last two day's feedings - it contracted violently when touched by the tweezers - or didn't like that I moved the LED fixture down, closer to the water surface.
Saturday morning I found it largely underneath the big rock to the left side of the tank. I removed the rock to avoid shadowing and it eventually moving closer towards the technic department (the eggcrate won't do much good if it decides to bulldoze its way in there)

I think I need to start thinking about where to put it...

Also at 10 to 14 inch water above it, which Kessil LED fixture would be better, the A360WE with a 70° (140° total) spread angle or the A360NE with only a 30° (60° total) spread angle and higher penetration?

How often to feed a gigantea?

How often to feed a gigantea?

Currently I feed my gig some Mysis (about half a cube) every day and it always takes it.

Is this too little, too much or just right?

It looks pretty good afterwards, though so far I can't see any significant growth.

The recovery of color is also not progressing as much as I would have expected by now.

It has some patches of brown but it isn't spreading much yet.
I run the Kessil at 100% intensity and 100% color for most of the day and it is only 19" above the anemone.
Do the Zooxanthellae need to adjust to the light?

BTW, how much flow do gigs want? Right now it gets a pretty stiff flow. It has logged it's foot underneath a little rock and hardly ever comes out far. But it also hasn't moved.

You want strong but indirect flow that can be created with streams running above and around the anemone from different directions but not blasting it directly.

I would think, from where they are found in the wild (shallows and tidal areas) to like changing flow from strong to almost stagnant.
Right now it gets pretty strong flow that is reflected of the front and seems to like it more than the Duncan coral behind it.

His is starting to regain zooxanthellae and should color up to normal in about 1 week. Once it start to show, the zooxanthellae will spread fast.
Feeding, if you want him to grow you can feed more than that. 2 cub CC every 2 days would be what I start with.
Don't feed if you do not want growth.

It has some patches of brown tentacles and I think they have expanded a bit and even some new popped up, but as of now it's not spreading fast. At the current speed I feel it will take a couple of months to fully color up again.
I also feel that it has more color in the morning than in the evening, almost as if the light is too strong and harming the zoox.

Most of last week the gig was hardly sticky at all but looking ok. It also took the Mysis I fed it daily. I did a 60% water change but it didn't change the stickiness much.

Today I noticed something black at the anemone's mouth. After carefully removing it I first thought it may be poo. It stank horrible and was kind of black on one side and irregularly white on the other end. I was worried that this could be a sign of a newly infection but then I noticed that a snail had died in front of the anemone and that this stinking "poo" were actually the fleshy remains of the dead snail.
It seems to me the anemone moved it to its mouth but didn't swallow it - at least I hope so.

The coloration progresses slowly. It has one large area that looks pretty brown now. The interesting thing is that it is a part that is the farthest form the center of the light fixture.

Little update:
It's still doing good but so far it hasn't regained much of its color.
I feed it daily about a cube of Mysis and it always gulps it down. It actually gets upset when I skip a feeding.

I caught it by now twice trying to eat one of my turbo snails but was able to rescue them. It may also have eaten one of my little hermit crabs.

It's still doing fine in the 10 gallon tank:

The tank is right now experiencing a munnid isopod explosion.

I wanted to move the gig and the fish to the 42 gallon tank this week but I needed that tank right now for two skinny little regals that need to be babied back. So it may take a little more time, at least until the regals are eating well enough.

You're keeping a pair of Regal angels in there? I almost traded away my juvenile Eibli dwarf angel thinking he's going to get too big for my 42 gal tank. Haha.

Regal Angels certainly one of the best Angels. They do get big but really slow growing. Mine in an almost 400 gal tank well fed healthy and fat but did not grow much. Start out as big as my Flame Angels and still only slightly larger after 1 year

These two are only 3 inches long and were way too skinny when I got them.

I only took them because they were just 40 ea and I couldn't watch them get worse week by week at the store. In hind sight I should have taken them home the day they arrived instead of waiting for 3 weeks, but I rather wanted to wait until they get the Red Sea color form. Though last Saturday I simply couldn't watch it anymore.

By now they are eating pretty well. Especially the thinner and submissive one is chasing after food. The other one then copies that. At least the get now little bellies after feeding. I think they will need at least a month to regain some weight.
I'm not yet sure if I will keep them after they folly recovered.

I love regals. I once got a 3/4" yellow belly regal but ended up donating to a fish store because it wouldn't have survived aggression from the fishes I had at the time even though I had a bigger tank then. The store put the angel in their corals section with no other fish and fed it with coral foods until the angel learned to accept mysis shrimp. It was a project for them and that's why I didn't ask for a penny in return. They are very cute when they are little. I like Angels much more than Tangs because of their shape, coloration and personalities.

I totally agree.

I got this blue one in the mid 90s straight from a wholesaler. It was just a bit over 4 inches. A while later I added another slightly larger one and they got along well. I had them for almost 10 years:

These blue-gray would be the right ones to go with the percula since they are also found at the Solomons. Though this time I would rather prefer to match the regal angel variant to my fridmani.

If you up to shipping them I would love to buy them from you. I wanted to get a pair but after get the first one I strike out twice to get the second one.
Corpus is the armpit of the reefing world. It is really hard to get anything good here unless I mail order them.

If I decide to sell them when they are fattened up enough you would be my first choice as I wouldn't want to give them to someone who might kill them due to inexperience.

After just 18 days the skinnier, submissive regal has made a full recovery despite being chased by the dominant one all the time. I feel getting chased has actually worked in his advantage as he can't be too picky when going after the offered food. As a result he eats like a little packman Mysis, brine shrimp and clams.

The dominant is more picky and slower when eating and also only goes for brine shrimp and clams but for some reason doesn't like Mysis. He is still significantly underweight and has probably another month to go. If he doesn't pick up eating more the roles will soon get reversed and the currently submissive will outgrow him and gain the upper hand.

I never had regals this small. I feel around 3 inch is ideal as they seem less specialized and go after floating food without much hesitation.

They are hit and miss at any size from my experience. You might try pellets. My current one, which is probably around 3.5 inches, would only eat NLS pellets in QT and ignored mysis and brine shrimp as well as mega marine frozen food. Now it eats just about everything.
