New guys - baby Regal and Venustus

All right, I think I need to make a move with my Venustus. The activity level of this fish is down noticeably today. Yesterday it was out and about picking at stuff, and today it's just hiding in a piece of PVC pipe.

I have not been able to find the live brine and I'm considering doing one of two things.

1. Order some brine off of LA - and pay to overnight it for Monday.
2. Put the fish in a 75 gallon full of cultured live rock with pods. The rock came out of my 120 gallon and is currently just a holding tank until I get my 240 cranking.

I'm just not seeing any progress doing what i'm done right now and feel like I should be doing something else. Tell me i'm wrong and I'll listen, but at the moment, I'm not sure what else to do.

I have hatched some of the brine, but it is tiny and I'm not sure the venustus even notices it. I'm going to try to feed it again in an hour or so, but i'm worried this one is going to go the way of the regal.

not sure I would want to stress it further by netting it...
maybe put the rock in the tank she is in..
is she eating anything?
what's the temp?

Not eating, temp down to 72. Is there a specific temperature I should shoot for?

The fish has never gone after any of the prepared offerings, but had been nipping at film algae pretty much the whole time.

Today, nothing... just hanging out in a pvc pipe.

Lights have stayed off, I've got an air stone in the tank and also have been running carbon.

Ammonia reads 0, not measured nitrites, but can't believe there would be any in an established tank, and the nitrates are less than 20.

Not really sure what else to do. I've been feeding small amounts of minced pe mysis, Hikari mysid and the reef nutrition arctic pods multiple times / day.

I hate moving rock into a tank that I have and will medicate at some point.

I'm not worried about the money, I just don't want this little thing to die.

I like 72...did you try ova?

Really sorry to hear about your fish but I cant say I am surprised. I have bought 5 fish from nyaquatics and 2 regals were DOA and the goldflake never ate in qt and the other 2 regals never ate in qt either n withered away even though michael says his regals are eating before they ship but I doubt it. I wont buy from nya again. Good luck to you and your venustus

Regals from the Philippines have an extreemly poor survival rate. This includes Bali, Jakarta manila. I got lucky with mine in that it wad eating brine at the wholesaler. I got a bit of an egoafter that and attempted a few more, non of them ate. I'd say that 1 out of ten will survive, but if you get lucky and it eats you'll be golden. Fiji, maldives and red sea regals are a much better investment.

That makes me feel a bit better, but still hate to lose a fish.

Venustus doing a lot of nothing. I double checked the water temp and its 72, it feels colder than that to me.

It seems that since I've lowered the temp, the activity level and appetite of the fish has gone down, it's no longer picking at film algae.! I've got another piece of LR with some good growth on it that I think I'm going to add.

Still keeping the lights off as well, except to feed.

I might post a video of the fish later today.

caribfan, unfortunately what you experienced is what I had with NYA as well. My first order was a yellow-belly regal angel. It came in with a bad case of cloudy/pop eye, never ate, and died three days later. Michael SWORE that it did not have the cloudy eye when it left the shop for shipping. I complained and he gave me some store credit.

I gave him the benefit of the doubt and used the store credit + more cash to buy an African angel. It again came in with a cloudy eye, and I was ****ED. It ate a little bit in my QT and then died two weeks later. I contacted Michael and he gave me store credit for the extra cash that I paid (he does not give store credit for previous store credit). I then used the store credit to buy a sohal tang and was hoping that I can at least get a healthy fish the last time. No, when the fish came in it was skinny to the bones, completely emaciated. I was pretty speechless at that moment.

The conclusion is that I would never buy fish from NYA again. I have done lots of research on this store and while some have positive experience (probably by luck), many do not. Several folks commented that not only the first fish died, but the replacement died as well. NYA just does not seem scrupulous since it knowingly ships sick fish just to get rid of the stocks. I only trust Liveaquaria for online shopping now.

I have known and been buying from Michael for about 10 years and he is one of my lfs...
Sure, I have had a couple glitches over the years but I have also had the same shipping glitches with dd, bz, pia, and private divers/collectors, shipping live animals is not easy...
In 10 years, the number of pos experiences far outweigh the neg and I wonder if perhaps you have just been unlucky...

I'd echo a positive experience with NYA. Have not ordered for a few years, but prior experiences were very good.

So I guess I was "unlucky" 5 completely different times also with either doa fish or fish that never ate in qt and died? Smh. Also only kept buying because I had store credit. Once all those fish died and no more credit, never dealing with michael and nya again as he was difficult in just giving the credit to begin with.

On the other hand, I have ordered from liveaquaria divers den approximately 12 times and only one fish died in qt (red mandarin) in which case the fine people of l.a. were nice enough to give me a full refund. I will stick with la from now on.

I guess so...
hmmm, but with 17 orders and 6 deaths maybe....
:lmao:, sorry, had to...

I'm going to have to echo most of this. My experience in dealing with NYA was with a C. deborae (friend of mine also got the other one in stock at the time). The specimen I got would not eat, and showed pretty much no interest now that I look back at the experience. The specimen my friend got was put in a tank that had corals and scallops, which the angel ate some of... I lost mine after 2-3 months. Coincidentally, my fish ended up getting a cloudy eye a couple weeks after getting it. I started treatment, and solved that before it passed away. My friend's specimen died shortly after I lost mine.

Never going to recommend giving them a try to anyone, and personally won't be ordering from them again either. I've since moved on to purchasing fish from LA and DD. Together, I've purchased 6 fish from them. Lost one fish for unknown reasons, and was given credit without hesitation.
