New H. Mag Anemone

Finally found a Magnifica at a LFS about 4 hours from my house. They had just gotten it in the day before I bought it. Didn't really have an option to watch it, as I was only in town for the weekend.

I didn't get any pictures while at the store, but it looked very good other than the mouth was a little open.

I got it home, acclimated it, then placed in the tank. Literally seconds later, my 2 tank raised occelaris clowns were playing in it. I am happy to see them in it, but I would have been OK if they waited a few days, or at least a few minutes....

Here is a picture now, I can't get a good picture of the slightly open mouth:

Looks decent to me, I've got a QT ready to go if needed, and can get cipro any time I need. Any thoughts?
 
nice specimen, it looks pretty healthy especially for one u just bot.

I've been looking for a small mag how big's ur tank
 
My tank is only a 40 breeder at the moment. I realize this anemone may outgrow it but I can deal with that later.

I'll definitely keep an eye on the inflate/deflate cycle. Like I said, the qt is ready and I can get cipro at any time.

The anemone appears to have planted its foot firmly, and is happy with the clowns. The anemone is currently about softball size.
 
Looks OK today still. Mouth is still kind of open. I can't get a picture of it. The mouth isn't "open", but it is a little "inside-out". There is marble sized piece of tissue sticking out of the mouth.

Might be starting to deflate. Not sure. Looks a bit smaller and more unhappy than earlier

This morning I woke up to find my Mag on the sand. Looks happy, but I'm not sure why it's down there.

Mags will let go and let the current take them to find a new spot. Cover those powerheads mags are wanderers for awhile.
 
Thanks. I moved him to a different rock, and he has seemed happy so far.

He is slowly moving higher up on the rock, which I expected. What I didn't expect is how long he's taking to move up. Almost looks happy midway up the rock. I'll try to take another picture today.

Haven't noticed any deflation since that first night, which I am still not sure was "real" deflation.

Did he crawed down (attaching to a rock on the sand) or he is not attach to anything?
If he let go and only fall to the sand and not suck into your PH or overflow, then you don't have enough flow for him. If he crawed to the sand then he is just looking for better place.

When condition is bad enough, magnifica just inflate their food and let go to sail to a better place. This often means disaster for the tank and a fish wipeout due to the Mag been chewup by PH.

It was kind of a combination of crawling and falling. But he was just sitting on the sand.

The flow in my tank is kind of funny. Really high, random flow in the upper half of the tank. Very low flow on the sand.

I'll post a picture later, but the anemone has moved midway up in my tank. Not quite to the high flow area yet. But the rock he is on does go up into that area, so he could get there if he wants.

Well, now he's back on the sand again. Does not look deflated, looks happy. My wife sent me these pics, they aren't the best.

A sick mag usually stays away from wave and light and usually unanchor itself. If it stays inflated, it is healing on the track by itself. It will climb when it feels robust. IMO mag detach itself very proactively so just cover your powerheads. when it feels physically happy but geographically unhappy, it will move.

I've had one that vanished, witnessed two chopped up in a mp10wes :sad2: or shall we say smashed up. Mag is very poisonous and when it smashes up, it terminates not only itself but all the fish. corals seem very immune though

sorry to say, but when it wanders, everything in its way dooms
 
Chopped Magnifica will kill all the fish in the tank other than the clowns. You got to do something to keep the Mag attached.

I will cover powerheads. What can I do to attach an anemone? Should I keep placing it on different rocks to see if it'll attach?
 
You need to take him out and treat him in a Hospital tank. Really simple to set up. Unattached anemone is sick anemone.
Initially sick Magnifica just deflates late in the day. This will worsen and there will be a point of no return.

If you want to leave him be in your DT then get some sort of cage/basket to keep him in and put the basket in higher water movement. The water motion where he is at is intolerable to him but he does not have the strenght to attach and move to a different area.
IMO, he just detach and let the current move him to a better area but there is no current at all so he just sit there (and die unless you help him)
