after talking to several people who have kept 2 or more hawkfish in a tank, i decided to give it a try with a second longnosed hawkfish. he's quite a bit smaller than the first one. took him out of quarantine last night, put him in an acclimation box for a few hours and then released him.

i put some mysis in at the same time so the other fish, including the first hawkfish, pretty much ignored the new guy. later, there was a little chasing, no nipping, but that all stopped in short order.

this morning, they were both perched on the live rock, just a couple of inches apart. they seem to be doing fine. fingers crossed for a peaceful co-existence.

I recently purchased a pair of longnose hawkfish from DD. No real advice but great fish from my limited experience with them. One of mine is noticeably larger than the other and I have witnessed zero aggression.

I love it when they "sit" together.

cool! you got a mated pair, right? longnosed hawks have been my all time favorite fish. i would have a whole tank full of them if i could! their personalities are amazing.

glad to know yours are peaceful. i've been feeding a tiny bit extra today to see the new ones reaction. he isn't a bit bashful and dashes around to get his share. the big one pays no attention to him whatsoever. and yeah, it's adorable when they perch together. :)

jco, good luck. hope yours are peaceful. so far, mine are doing great together. the little one often follows the bigger one around the tank. :)

So cute! I've always had shrimps in my tank that stopped me from adding one of these, but I plan to have one in a shrimp-free tank down the road. They always command my attention when I see them in shops, just such a unique looking fish.

i do have one cleaner shrimp (you can see it in the picture). never had a problem but then, he's pretty big. once in a while, i throw in a couple of ghost shrimp and they don't last 2 seconds.

not only are they unique but they have really cute personalities. i can't walk by the tank without being followed. they are good eaters but i've never seen a new fish eat like this little hawkfish. nothing hits the sand bed!

Poor picture. Still in QT letting tank go fallow. The big one is pushing 4"....usually like to get smaller fish to watch them grow but didn't want to pass them up when I saw them on DD. This was before pairs were available nearly every other day. :rolleye1:

Very happy with them though. Can't wait for them to be in the reef.

thanks to you and the others, johnikemysweet. :)

this new guy is the boldest fish i think i have ever had. nothing intimidates him, especially at feeding time, and he's already front and center begging for food every time i go near the tank.

there has been zero squabbling between the two hawks and i often see them swimming together.

A lot of posturing yesterday from my larger original hawkfish, but definitely a lot less today. Pretty much swimming and perching separately. Great looking fish with awesome personalities!
