New Life Spectrum Ick Shield

Anyone have any comments on this? They are selling a medicated food and a treatment powder. The powder is supposedly "chloroquine" according to reports. If this is true there might finally be chloroquine phosphate packaged for aquarium use which would be cool.

I'm sure it doesn't work, fish are more likely not to eat it and even if they do the amount they ingest will probably only be enough to let the ich become immune to it

Thanks for link HumbleFish. Dmorty, I'm not a big fan of the food with CP in it but they are also selling the Ick-Shield bath solution powder which looks to be CP for use as we normally use CP, treating the tank water. so finally there is a CP packaged for aquarium use.

As far as effectiveness I can't say, but fish will eat it, a brand new Regal Angel I brought home from MACNA took to the food the next day no problem.

How much is that and how big of a bath will it make?

I think the medicated food is likely to be effectively useless, but the ick shield powder (if it is CP) could be interesting. I saw it on ebay, but didn't look closely to see if it said CP, or if the dosage was right or not.

Here is what i found for directions:
Bath Solution

Combats fish ecoparasites

Usage: 0.6g per 20 gallons for 8ppm in tank water.

Marine: use for 21 days

Freshwater: use for 20 days

DO NOT EXPOSE TO CORALS OR ANEMONES!

and active ingredient:

Active Ingredient: I,4-Pentanediamine, N4-(7-chloro4-quinolinyl)-NI, NI-diethyl

So it looks to be some sort of Chloroquin substance. I googled the 7-chloro4-quinolinyl and there is a research paper that said it was effective against parasites.

Ok I just meant if I didn't see any improvement over a couple days to possibly add more. So if I have no other tank other than what had rock in it, would u go ahead and add it as I have no the options?

In my experience most fish hate it.
I had african cichlids spit it out and I thought they were sick. When I gave the normal spectrum pellets, they ate again.

Whoops sorry, misread. Thought you were talking about the food version. That I have no experience.
If what they are selling is pure, I don't see why it wouldn't work as well as other brands.

I think the powder works. I put in my DT for 21 days after 2 fish died of Ich and my yellow tang, firefish, chromis etc. started showing signs too. After a day or 2 of the treatment, they stopped flashing. Did not see any issues after that.

You have to be careful when using this stuff, if it lands on your corals say good bye, a local reefer here is using it in his 120 gal reef system and said there was a note inside the jar stating to keep it off coral and rock. He learned the hard way and lost a few corals. So now he tries to direct feed the fish so they grab it right away. He has been using it for approx. 5 weeks and still has ick if that helps any.

Can you give us an update or your success or failure with the powder?

Thanks!
