these wrasses can get along with other wrasses added to the tank too, as long as the one u add is a nice one lol

kinda odd, but it has a wierd looking side, im assuming its just a scrape or something because its very healthy acting and looking other wise...any thoughts?

I had a male and he ate a lot of snails and other clean up crew items. That never bothered me. Mine also did not seem to get alone with the other wrasses. Within 6 months of adding he had killed all of my fairy and flasher wrasses. Other than that he was a great fish!

everyone has a different experience with fish. Im hoping since its one of the last fish added and female, that it will be a nice fish. so far, hasnt been bothered and is actually getting bullied, not bad though, a little by the gramma and purple tang.

I was hoping Nate would chime in :)

The first time I ever heard of this species was at a (now defunct) place called Harbor Aquatics in Indiana. Joy and her husband used to run the place and (incidentally) they were contributors to the SPZ reef aquarium.
Anyways, the point of my story is that they used melanurus in their tanks to control pests. One problem with the species, though: as they mature they might pick on desirable invertebrates.
Looks like a laceration from handling on this fish. I'll bet it recovers quickly.

Wow, nice photos. If you dont mind me asking ,what kind of camera did you use?

The wrasse is a beauty.I had to remove a christmas wrasse recently after adding a pair of helfrichis. They were almost lunch.

Brandon,

What type of sand bed do you have? Wondering as I'm thinking of getting a Melanurus but I've read you should have a deep sanbed.

Since it is so small it may be some time before you see the same things I was seeing and hopefully you may never. To be honest it didn't really bother me. That fish was cooler than either of my fairy wrasses or my flasher wrasse put together. It wiped out my zoanthid eating nudibranchs and my infestation of pyramidellid snails (that is what I bought it for). Then when it finished them it ate 80% of my amphipods, stomatella snails, and brittle stars. Then when it finished all of those it could find it ate all of my Astraea Conehead Snails. Then when it finished them it ate all of the turbo snails it could pluck off the rock. You could hear it from the other side of the house! It would pop them off the rock then grab a hold of the base and smash them on the glass until they didn't know where they were. Then he would take a few more bites and leave the rest upside down to rot and waste away. Even with all of this it was still worth it. I called him the protector of my reef. If there was a pest in the tank he would hunt them down and eat them. I enjoyed that. By the way I never saw him picking on the other wrasses but I suspect it was him. He was the only fish I added before all of my other wrasses fins started to appear all torn up. That eventually ended up with both of the fairies and the flasher disappearing for good. When I first got the fish I went around telling everyone that he was getting along with the other wrasses and he seemed to for a while. So I am just trying to set the record straight at least based on my experience. FWIW he never bothered any other fish in the tank, at least that I can recall. Here is a picture...
