New S. Mertensii

Ok you guys, I am the crazy person who bought the mertensii from reefscience. I know I said that I was going to wait for the LFS to get one for me. Then I remembered that my LFS didn't even know what I was talking about when I mentioned the name Mertensii. I have been looking for one for quite some time. I didn't know I would spend that much just for one. I asked my husband and he said I could buy it even after I told him the price. He knows how long I have been wanting a Mertensii. I keep pinching myself to make sure I'm not dreaming.

Reef science went above and beyond this morning to make sure it got here fast. At first there was a mix up in shipping it was suppose to be priority over night. FedEx made an oops and had it shipped standard overnight. I talked to Chad Bryant (reefscience) on AIM and he made things right. In less than 20 minutes he got FedEx to deliver it at 8:59am. I was like WOW..Right after I said "ok I will let you know when it gets here" the door bell rang. YAY!:D

I opened the bag it was in, its mouth was closed completely. Then I put it in my refugium while still in the bag. Then drip acclimated it to the tank. After a hour and a half I added it to my tank. It seems to be liking the motion of the tunze wave box. Mouth is closed still and its tentacles are longer in my tank than they were in the holding tank at reefscience. It looks like its trying to move from the spot I placed it. It has plenty of room to move if it wants to. Let me know what you guys think?

To other Mertensii owners...when should I start feeding it?
sorry about the blurry pictures.

I will try to take better pictures later.

I am really starting to not like you. ;) ;)

Looks pretty darn good, and already like the color of it. Think it is going to look really great in a week or two.

I have never had one, but I wouldn't feed it for a least a couple of days.

Are you saying you use to like me? :D lol :p ..you are the second person that said I should wait a couple of days before feeding the anemone. The second person was Doni ( the lady with the purple haddoni)..Just curious.... why in a couple of days?
This is my first carpet anemone so I might be asking a lot of questions.
Here is a video:) click on image

That is a good point, I dislike you more now. ;) ;) ;)

The reason I like to wait ( and it is hard to wait ), is because eating takes energy, and I like the anemone to use all of its energy to settle in. Plus, it could pull the food in, but not have all the energy to digest it, so the food would just set inside of it and go bad ( for lack of a better term )

I will do my best to answer any questions, but all my carpet experience is with Haddonis.

Holy flow batman, that video looks really cool. But, I wonder if Mertensii, like flow like giganteas, or less flow like Haddonis.

Have a feeling that it looks even better in person -- more colorful. Good job.

Thanks Todd for answering the question about feeding it..that makes a lot of sense.
I read in the book Marine Invertebrates by Ronald L. Shimek ..."This anemone prefers relatively strong currents and will do well in a tank with a wavemaker."
Oh I know its just a book and you can't believe everything you read. That is what is great about reefcentral and thats why I'm here. It seems to be enjoying the waves though.

I agree that it is only a book, but after watching your video, I have to agree with it. I know my haddoni would be way ticked off with that much flow.

And glad that you understood what I was getting at about feeding, sometimes I am as clear as mud, a wordsmith I am not. :)

Congratulations. In my experience mertens are very similar in their needs to haddoni as far as light and flow, except they will want to attach to a rock that offers protection for their foot.

You don't need to feed it anything big for a couple days, but I would spray a few mysis in near its mouth just to keep the feeding response active. In general these guys are very easy shippers and don't seem to have a lot of ill effects. I would guess that it will probably increase in size about 50% in the next month as it gets used to your tank and fills up more with water.

It is certainly a mertens, but just out of curiosity, does it have a spotted/striped foot like mine have had?

Congratulations on your snag! And hold on tight to your spouse! Isn't it great to have a partner that knows what something like this means to you-and says yes-in spite of the price. Good to heat that reefscience did a great jop in the packing shipping department. I agree with the wait a couple days before feeding for the exact same reason. Plus if it is otherwise healthy-it won't starve in two or three days-but if it is not happy and settled-food would most likely not be the answer.Keep us posted-I'm pulling for you/it.

Damn

Damn

Damn wicked that thing is hot.

Just to think i was going try my luck at another gigantea this weekend.

One is just not enough lol.

That thing is gorgeous good luck with it.

Yeah I know I am definitely holding on to hubby tight. He is getting extra special treats from me. I am going to feed it in a couple of days but if phender says give it some mysis I think I might do that.

Feed your husband whatever he wants tonight. If Phil says give the nem a little Mysis-I wouldn't disagree with him-he knows more bout nems than most anybody-but I still would not give food to an unsettled nem-yours however looks pretty dang good and happy from the vid. As most people know-getting a good healthy specimen to start with goes a long way in keeping one alive.
