reactors are really fluidized cannisters. The water is forced through the media rather then allowing it to passively skirt around the outside of the media. This makes the media more effective.
Carbon and phosban are best run this way--either in a stripped down cannister filter or a reactor such as the one Two Little fishes sells.
A calcium reactor is only needed when there is a large draw on the use of calcium such on a totally sps tank. Most of the time you can use two part dosing which is alot less problematic then using a reactor.

hey there,
i am new to the hobby.......
i was given a 10 gallon aquarium a year ago that contains a maroon clown fish and a few other damsels, and a African knob fish...
i am really enjoying this hobby and wanted to expand my aquarium size to 30 gallons, this time though i want to include some coral in it......
can anyone tell me how to start the aquarium such as what type of lighting do i need and how strong?...what type of filter?

a few points:
30 gals takes 30 lbs of live rock to have the proper filtration
for lps and soft corals you need between 3-5 watts per gallon. In your case that would be between 300-500 watts.
I would suggest you start with these corals anyways as sps corals require a lot more stable water conditions and require alot more light.
you will also need between 600 and 1200 gph flow in the tank. I koralia 3 power head will give you 850 gph
For heating 3 watts per gallon so I would go with a 150 watt heater.
For added filtration you might want to think of a protein skimmer--the remora c has a good hang on the side one.
Finally the opportunity of upgrading gives you the chance to get rid of the damsel fish. They are not good tank mates for other fish esp in a 30 gal tank.

I have no idea what a plankton reactor is. It good be referenced to growing your own phytoplankton for your tank.
GFO means granular ferrous oxide of which phosban is one type of it.
People run GFO in a reactor to bring down the level of phosphates in the water. Phosphates are one of the fuels of algae and also can cause browning of the growth tips on sps corals.
Phosphates are introduced into the tank by overfeeding and or using tap water.

IMO nice fish for a 30 gal(my favorites)
1 or 2 flame gobies
1 yellow watchman goby
1 or 2 blue green chromies
1 or 2 bangii cardinals
1 or 2 clown fish
1 six line wrasse
1 or 2 shrimp--cleaner and or blood shrimp
1 hawk fish
1 dwarf angel---flame angel or coral beauty
1 basellet
