ya reading the article about closing the newbie forum and the column, I thought it was the dumbest thing you could do.

WaterKeeper!
i must say without dought, this is far more indepth than i ever imagined you would go.
i strongly agree with you on droping the new to the hobby forum due to some of the simple and sometimes extreemly lengthy questions that are asked.
after reading these hours of of your intellect on reeefkeeping, im very impressed, since you usually dont bring to light this vast knowledge of information you have for beginners as well as intermediate and experienced reefkeepers.
to sum it up,

It's a plot, without this forum all those newbies will give up and provide a great source of cheap slightly used equipment for the rest of us. :D

Well I didn't even look to see the date you wrote it on, even if it’s an April fool’s joke or not, to be honest I can't even tell because some of the responses in this thread now are terrible. Many others obviously didn't "get it" either because their all for removing the new comer info. If you want to stop new comers to the hobby put permits in place at fish stores. Stopping a newbie info website wouldn't stop anything, as a matter of fact would make it worse. Like I said before its fish store owners who are the problem and its sites like this that clean their mess. Second of all I hate the word newbie and anyone who uses it in a condescending way in any hobby is a moron. As if they were born and new everything about reefing, and they didn't have to learn themselves. That word is used in every hobby, sport, club etc and its ridiculous.

ppppffff wow alaska thread, I read your post, then your sig. Kinda confusing how someone who believes in that saying would make a post like that????

Gee, I'm sorry Chago. Sometimes Waterkeeper forgets himself and thinks of reefing as a fun hobby rather than the serious business it is. I will try to keep form joking with the <del>Newbie</del> Newcomer and limit my posts to boring scientific facts based on sound economic principles and environmentally prudent advice.

No no waterkeeper, what I said was, I was confused if it was a April fools joke because all the people who were posting nasty things about newbies and how we should get rid of them etc. I was not refering to you. When I was speaking to you, besides the fact if closing the new comer forum or not I was just expressing how important the new comer forum really is and it should never be removed. And as a matter of fact this website would be commiting business suicide if they did remove that because 100% of their members joined because they were "newbs" looking for info and most of their hits are from people who are looking for info, newbie or experienced. So I don't know why a sponsor would want to sponsor if the site is all seasoned veterans who all already have equipment etc. Yes some will upgrade etc but majority of business is new comers.

sorry I just want to clarify to everyone so theirs not misunderstanding. I am not giving hell for Waterkeeper about his joke at all. I'm just reminding everyone how important the new to the hobby forum is to the hobby and reefcentral community.

My after post about the word newbie was not directed to waterkeeper or people who use the word newbie. No it was directed to the people using the word newbie in a macho, arrogant fashion. It's probably one of the things that make me the most frustrated when people act like that. None of you are poseiden and any smart reefer will always call himself a rookie, because were all learning everyday. Even the doctors, scientists and researchers who teach us what we know. Appreciate the hobby and first and foremost, appreciate the animals. Thats why we need you Sgt. Waterkeeper to make sure the maggots raised at the local fish store by the leach owner, can be properly trained here at Reef Central.

Cheers

Be assured we are not closing down either the New to the Hobby Forum nor the Newbie Corner. It was all part of April Fool's day on RC. Or is it WC? :D

Back six years ago I wrote So you got a new fish tank Newbie? thread and it, and its follow up threads, were very popular with thousands of people reading them. That is really saying a lot as RC's membership back then was just a shade over 38,000 compared to the 217,000 members we now have. The drill sergeant style poked fun at newbies but also provided essential information on starting a reef tank in an light hearted format.

I still try to keep things on the light side as a hobby should be fun and not a chore. True the Newbie Corner is somewhat more subdued but the Reefkeeping editors tend to keep me in check and I can't get away with some of the humor I have in my threads in the articles for the Magazine.

RC is not going to turn its back on the novice reefkeeper no matter how hard I plead with them to do it. ;)

Could you have left the sarcasm out in at least one post LOL Like honestly LOL

Alright I still hate you and always will. And yes that article is great and that entire thread can be published. What RC should do is everyone who joins the site should be forced to read that after they join. They should have to read each page of that thread before being allowed to post how big of a reef tank do you need for a Oscar

Nope it is not in my nature, which is probably why I lost the job as obituary writer for the local newspaper.

Yes, I for one do not want to hear all of this levity. I just want to see charts, chemical equasions, formulas, theories and raw scientific data. I would also like to hear more quotes from physicists like Einstein and historical people like Galallao.
Sometimes Paris Hilton has some interesting news.
