Newbie Introduction Thread

Hi, I'm Julie, from Millbrook, AL. what started as an 80g in 10/05 as an anniversary gift from my hubby, has excalated into an all out addiction. The 80g has become a softie tank w/ 3 lone LPS's.

I now have: 35g hex-started in 1/06 as a SH tank, then moved to LPS, now is a fuge for my 180g upgrade. I bought a 30g long in 1/08 for a frag tank. My hubby didn't like all the frags in my DT 80g so guess what...had to buy a whole new tank!! I've got a 55g, started in 10/06 that has TONS of zoas in it.

But, guess what???? as if that wasn't enough....got a 180g in my playroom! everything from these tanks is going into that. It took a full week to fill up the 180, the 35g fuge, and a 10g that is housing some of the rock that will go into it. It's gonna have a 55g tank-half for sump/half for frag area. octopus recirculating skimmer, 2x250w DE MH, 2 t5's. I bought the 250w radiums to bring out the color for my zoas, but might be too blue, so I bought 3x250 14k hamiltons just in case. haven't hooked up the lights yet.

during this upgrade, I have 8 tanks hooked up. can I say "insane". will be dropped to 4 after I'm done.

not a newbie here, just kept seeing Mucho saying "anyone...anyone...anyone.....!!"

Thanks Julie for the insight into the insanity. I know very well how addicting and expensive this habit can be. I currently have 6 tanks set up and 2 more in the garage waiting for water. Further more I spend more time on RC than I do watching TV (whitch is not a bad thing, but nothing else gets done either).

My name is Collin I am a student and I am addicted to my SW tank. I am from Denver and have a 12NCDX although not my first choice of tank but it will do for now. I LOVE THIS HOBBY first and foremost very few things bring the joy of a reef tank I have been in this hobby for about six months now and been lurking and doing research for about a year :p Couldn't resist...

OK, Ok, I didn't want to admit it, but I too have a problem. My name is Gregg. I'm a long time lurker with this as my second post. I started with a FOWLR tank in November 2005 with a 24" PC lamp and no skimmer. Now I have a chiller, RODI system, my 2nd skimmer, my 3rd light (T5), LOTS of pumps including Mag2,7,9,18, a Vortech, and 6-8 Maxijets everywhere (fresh RO/DI, mixed spare saltwater, quarantine tank, sump, Phosban reactor....you get the picture). Oh yeah, and along the way I added a few mushrooms, several LPS, and a couple of SPS, some zoos, palys, and a softie or two, but I'm a fish nerd first and a coral nerd second. If growing hair algae was an Olympic sport, I'd be a Gold Medalist. My setup includes a 55 gallon custom tank built into a set of bookshelves with a DIY 30 gallon sump that I custom fit under the bookshelf cabinet.

I'm April. I don't have a reef tank yet. I'm mostly a forum lurker in the process of learning what I need to before setting up a tank. I figure i'll have one setup within the year. I haven't been in the hobby for some years. I've kept swfo for eight years.
I look forward to reading about people's experiences with reefkeeping, i learn alot when others document their experience.
Thanks you all!

We are all waiting to see that marvelous tank of yours my friend. I'm sure you will do well with it.

Not exactly a noob, but only lately have started really poking around the zoanthid forum. I'm Jeff and got back into marine aquariums about three years ago. I kept fish only systems as a high school and college student, but gave it up when I joined the U.S. Air Force. After 22 years, I retired, moved home to Oklahoma, and caved in to unrelenting pressure from my youngest son (who, by the way, became a staff biologist at the Oklahoma Aquarium). We now have six tanks: 72g mostly softy, 55g mostly LPS and SPS, 40g frag, 12g nano, and two homemade 10g nano experimental systems for things he's tried (unsuccessfully) to explain to me. Oh, and a 185 in the garage waiting on me to win the lottery to set up. A common thread through all of the tanks (except 10g nanos) is a variety of zoanthids and palythoas, which are really becoming a passion for me. We don't have anything particularly "rare" or "limited edition," but I'm pretty happy with what we do have. Click the gallery icon to see a few shots of some of our zoas.

How is everyone doing? I m super new to this site and I have been in the saltwater hobby for 2yrs now and have been pretty much all my life dealing with freshwater fish/world. I m 24yrs old I have an AquaPod Tank with nothing but Zoanthids, one 29 and 55g tank that I m just starting back again. both my 29g and my 24g Aquapod will serve as a growout tank as soon as either the 55 or the 150g is set.
I m in the process saving for a Light fixture for any of the two but I m not an expert with MH fixtures. Any suggestion would be highly appreciated

Welcome to the forum mate.

I think we should make this a sticky so all of our new reefers will see this thread and make an introduction, or, maybe not. Introducing oneself goes a long way as other reefers will remember you and probably chime in even quicker when the need arises. Just an idea is all.

Regarding the lights, are you looking for good growth, great coloration or decent combination of both? I would post this question separately here in this forum. Maybe you could title it, " Help me choose my lighting source/type? or something along those lines.

32, Dave, north jersey. got hooked from the 'Professor' (life long friend)...so thanks to him...the last 2 1/2 years I have been eating and sleeping with thoughts of money, equipment, design, parameters, etc.. And now I am simply obsessed with growing the marine garden with zoas.
stats:
120 AGA, 8 54wt5s, phos/carbon reactors, AETech sump and skimmer, and tons of other stuff I bought instead of my kids college fund.
coral:
open brain, candycane, my torch died last week
and about 30 zoas frags and colonies and GSP
fish: flame angel, coral beauty, 2 false percs, cleaner wrasse, 2 firefish (well only 1 lately), lawnmower blenny, and a yellowbelly hippo. and a ton of snails and crabs
I do data processing for financial statements and
thanks to Merrill, I have a job for the last 10 years, but since we were bought out, I could always work at a petshop with everything I learned from here

hi i'm josh 14 years old
currently i have a 6g nano with a warner marine h1 skimmer i just rescaped and now i am starting to get more into lps and not as many softies and zoos but the tank has been running for 8 months and i have been into saltwater for a bout 3 years but last year just started reefing :)

Alright, I suppose I can post too. My name is Jon. I'm 25 years old. My wife and I live in Nashville Tennessee (technically we're in Bellevue TN, but the post office still calls us Nashville). When I turned 15 I got my first job at the Seahorse pet store in Allison Park, PA (just a little north of Pittsburgh). I worked there for 2 years and loved it. They've got one of the nicest fish/coral setups I know of. Since my days at the Seahorse ended, I've had no tank...not even a goldfish.

Fast forward about 8 years. I'm not sure what sparked my interest again, but I said to my wife, "Wife! I'm getting a reef tank!" To which she responded, "That's what you think!" After a couple weeks of explaining (and bugging the crap out of her), she finally caved and I got my tank. I went with the 3 gallon Picotope, with her understanding that if I can keep everything alive and growing in a 3gal, then I can keep just about anything alive and growing. Right now in the 3 gal, I have 4 kinds of zoas, 1 Ric, red, green, striped, blue, hairy mushrooms, 4 heads of candy cane coral, green star polyps, an orange/red monti cap, and a nice hunk of hammer coral. I also just added a teenie tiny pulsing xenia to the tank last night. I'm pretty excited about that one.

The next tank I plan to put together is a 10 gallon frag growout tank. I figure this makes the most sense because costs will be minimal and it will help significantly when it comes time to stock a bigger tank.

Hiya,

I'm 22. I mostly stick to FW. Even though the aquariums are mostly my hobby, it was actually my boyfriend who decided to try SW. He has an aquapod, and my reef is a 10 gallon. It's a pretty simple set up I threw together for a free mantis. I added two small zoa frags a few months ago, and they've been doin' well, and noticably growing. There's tons of room for improvement, but I enjoy the tank quite a lot. I just wish I could keep snails in there for more than 30 minutes!

You won't see me post hardly ever, but I spend a ton of time reading forums and plotting future tanks and hypothetical improvements.
