Nikon D70 pictures

I'm considering buying a used D70 with stock lens, and a DFWMAS member was kind enough to lend me his for a few days so I could try before I buy. Last night I took a few pictures.

Here are two huge ones (2000 pixels wide):

And then here are some of the nicer ones. All pictures were taken in Aperature Priority, and were shot in ISO 100 or 400 (not sure which because I didn't pay close enough attention). The lens is standard; I don't have access to a 105mm Macro lens. f/4.5, custom white balance set, shot freehand. Surprisingly, the fish pictures came out nicely, better than when I try to capture them with either of my Fuji cameras. The Nikon trends toward lots of blue, and too much red in my opinion.

All images were run through Photoshop, to resize, adjust levels (drop Red by .20), and Unsharp Mask (100-125% @ .3 radius).

This one was odd, with the color shifted on the coral somewhat. It happened a couple of times, both with corals and with fish. Not sure what happened.

All pictures taken freehand. Some were taken with the lens against the glass to avoid shake.

I'm really impressed that I can get fish pictures freehand. No flash.

That's it. Another club member offered to lend me his 105mm lens, which I may take him up upon. Being able to shoot at f/2.8 or lower would be nice.

Looks good Marc!!! I think you'll buy it. Especially when you try the 105. I just took a jump also, but you can see that in the lounge.

I don't know if that was from the lens or (more likely) the sensor in the camera itself. Either way that isn't good.

So its the lens...makes you appreciate those fluorite elements no? It makes sense now that you say CA, I've just never seen it that bad before.

Chromatic aberration.

With the kit lens, and looking through the aquarium at an angle I wouldn't let it bother me.

I wanted to focus more on fish tonight. 125 images later... here are some I liked.

I like this shot of the A. micropthalma. (Scripps Acro)

These guys (Onyx Percs) are just so cute. I love feeding them each day. These were tank raised in Houston, but don't have the black markings I'd hoped for.

One more of the female mandarin.

The pictures look great Marc... Slr's are tough for me to get used to. I like my old Kodak pictures just as much. I need more practice.lol

Excellent images Marc.
D70 comes with a few stock lens, which one do you use?
Is it NIKKOR AF-S DX 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED?

As I commented on your bukld thread these are very nice.
If you endup getting the D70 used and have a choise between the 2 kit lenses 18-50 or 18-70 go for the 18-70 as it gives you a bit more reach as well as it seems its a bit better than the 18-50.

Mark, thanks for the thread. I've been looking into a Nikon as well. These shots help narrow the choices. My local photog place has a used D70 as well.
