Nook's Reef!!

My friend you are a legend. This is a amazing setup if i say so myself. I have hopes of this one day. Im 23 and have had 3 successful reefs, but what you have is remarkable. I cant wait till my business takes off so i can get something such as yourself.

If im ever out in that area i need to make it a point and stop by to see that monstrosity.

Keep up the amazing work, and ill keep drooling.

hows this thread going??
any back room pictures or updates, and hows that front glass looking? any new creatures in the tank or growth pictures?

I need to get someone over here to take some pictures. After a long time (8-9 months) of high nitrate (30-50ppm), I have finally gotten the upper hand through water changes and the denitrator. Tanks are both looking pretty good right now except for aiptasia, but I ordered a bunch of Peppermint Shrimp from Premium Aquatics yesterday. For the first time in a long time, my parameters are perfect and things are growing again.

I am going to have GEO build me another skimmer to compare to the behemoth I have now. The behemoth I have now is great, but with the beckett he is going to build, I can put the system water through the skimmer about 4x/hour versus just one time per hour.

For what it's worth, nitrate of 30-50ppm stops growth of softies and stonies. Also, thanks for the interest in my thread:)

I have a DIY Sulfur reactor, and its great...
currently its made of PVC, but i am re-doing it to make it out of acrylic. that way i can see inside, and so i can re-do the pump on it. (a MJ starts to rattle too much, and i am going with a reputable brand pump. havent decided if i will go with a external (small blueline/pan/iwakee) or internal (gen X/Eheim/Q1)

thats a lot of nitrates with a reactor? did yours get turned off, or did the flow slow too much and kill a bunch of bacteria or was it too fast through the reactor where it never colonized? just curious?

Also, i cant wait to see what you do with your upgrades! its always so nice to see quality equipment and how much of a difference it makes on a tank.... (one day....)
Keep us updated.

I think my issue with the denitrator was I used too much sulphur (10lbs) in a 6" diameter tube with too small a recirculating pump and it channeled. Since I took it down to 5lbs, it has been kicking in and working quite nicely. This was a hunch I had and another friend here in town, Dwayne, thought was logical as well. Turns out it was good advice.

Dave,
What would happen if you cleaned your skimmer, and then turned off the recirc pump?

how much difference does the recirc pump make on your skimmer. you mentioned that it really came to life when you put the beckett injection on it. do you contribute very much to your recirc?
this way, you could measure how much difference it really makes by measuring the skimmate on average as it sits, and then let it run a week without the recirc. that will let you know how much more the beckett is kicking out then the recirc...

it would be interesting to know.

and didnt you mention earlier that your running a barracuda with a meshwheel verses a needle wheel? has the mesh stretched or wore any? have you ever replaced it?

The beckett and the needlewheel by themselves don't produce good results due to the size of the skimmer. I use a Reeflo Dart needlewheel with the improved design impeller from Chris at Reef Specialty. This is the beefier pump with the Baldor motor, not the smaller, cheaper motor that I originally used. I ditched the mesh mod many moons ago when the new, improved NW came out. I have been very pleased with that NW impeller.

Both NW and beckett together have been a great combo and the skimmer body is milky white. The thing I am looking to improve upon is passes per hour through the skimmer.

That is very clear and understandable. Do you
run an air pump on the dart or no?
And the run through rate makes very good since! Understandable why you would give it a try. Plus you Have a nice room to hide the equipment and by running the air elsewhere you wont get as noisy of a Skimmer anyway

I stopped using the air pump a long time ago as well. The beckett really solved that problem.

Took the opportunity to snap some pics of the Wookie's tank yesterday and almost got eaten by a sneaky Bogie!
