Norwegian 133 g acrylic sps tank

WOW, that is heartbreaking. I get disappointed when a frag of mine RTNs.

But you have a very nice tank, the end of one adventure is the start of a new one.

Oh man...this is so terrible... :( What a bad loss. Well, you just got to carry on dude. It just means its a complete start over almost...and you got to make the effort to look for corals and try and get back some of rare pieces etc.

Thats the way this hobby is sometimes. DO you know why it happened?

Oh god! That is terrible. I know the feeling but this was a huge loss. Hang in there, fingers crossed the pearl berry hangs on.

Thank you for your support. I think there might be a couple of reasons why it happened.

* temperature fluctuation
* dead organisms inside live rock due to the moving process
* weakened and stressed corals
* horrible water quality due to tissue loss on the biggest colonies

Here is the last picture taken of the old system before I moved. Every single coral in this photograph didn't make it (except some zoanthid and a couple of Montiporas).

Wow.....sorry to hear this. It must have been some kinda chain reaction. I have moved tanks 3 times and never had losses like that. Some sure and loss of color from the stress but that is horrible man. I feel for you and hope you can get over this......Im sure you can.

On a side note how do you like the acrylic vs. glass. I would be torn between a starphire glass tank and an acrylic tank if I did an upgrade.

You new tank looks fantastic with or with out corals and Im sure it will only get better.

Thanks Darryl :)

I will get some of the corals back as frags from friends. But some of the ones I was most fond of is lost forever.

In this new setup I will have fewer colonies. I'll try to choose from 20 Acroporas. That will be a maximum. I'm not going to have Acroporas standing on the sand in this setup (lol).

I am very glad I chose acrylic. I was not sure about it when I ordered it. I am still concerned about scratches. But it looks 100 times better than my old glass tank!

These are the corals that I have left after the crash:

Montipora Rainbow (brown as hell)
Montipora Reverse Sunset (at a friend of mine)
Montipora Australiensis (half dead)
Montipora Venosa
Montipora Setosa (not sure if it will make it)
Heliofungia Actiniformis
Fungia Repanda
Zoas: Yellow/orange and Lava Rain
Ricordea: Peach, yellow/green/orange

Man all that work and have that happen. That has got to be devastating. Ouch!
Looks like a nice new setup anyway.

You have my sympathies...
I know a little bit about how you must feel ;
I'm in the process of losing all my acroporas to STN...
Can't wait to see your beautiful pics again !
Keep it up !

Thank you. I am very satisfied to have all the technique in a room and not under a small bench like I was used too:celeb1:

Thank you, and sorry for your losses.

A friend of mine helped me with the aquascaping and the sand is finally in the tank.

This is the result. The stones with a red circle around are to be sold or thrown out. The placement of the few corals are temporary.

Edit:

The "tube" from the returnpipe is also temporary. Just have to find the final pvc parts I need :)

Yes. The PD is still alive. But it's got popeye on one of the eyes. It seems that the eye with the popeye is not functioning 100%. Looks good and eats well. But we'll see in a couple of weeks. I don't know if it has organ damage or other diseases. Time will show :)

Here's a mobile phone picture of my PD. In the last days it seems that the left eye is getting smaller. I just hope that it's not only my imagination.

The charger to my Canon EOS600D has been missing since I moved. But yesterday I finally found it! Celebrated that with some pictures today. Hard to get good photos with the current lighting. I am looking forward to my new Orphek:bounce1:

Nice photos!

Did I read that right??? You're going full LED? Which Orphek unit are you going for?

There are many LED users who say that SPS corals under LED's dont colour up as well under LEDs due to a "lack of spectrum of the LED's".

Is this something you've thought about? or maybe you've seen a LED tank in person with really good colour?

Thanks Sahin :)

Haha, yeah you read right! I am trying the brand new Orphek Atlantik.

I've seen some tanks under Orphek led canons and Orphek Nilus/PR156 and the colors they got was pretty good. I have always been pro T5, but I want to try something else. I really think the new Orphek Atlantik will give me the colors I want (and need). It's going out from the factory late November/early December. I think we'll be one of the first in the world to try this lamp commercially.

Check out the PAR readings from the Atlantik ;)

The sad thing is that I can't compare the colors on the corals since all are dead:headwally:

Yes, it must of been very heartbreaking to lose all those SPS...:sad1:

As for the LEDs in general; I hope you will get good colour. I almost placed an order for the GHL Mitras...But due to it being out of stock at my LFS, I decided to wait a bit more...did a bit more reading...and now I am in two minds.

I suppose I will replace my T5 tubes and run them for about 9-10 months and then at that moment, if I see lots of nice results from Mitras owners I will buy the MItras (or any other brand that happens to be the best at that time).

Your plans for this tank looks very good. Hope to see this tank mature!

Yeah, the worst part is to start all over again with cycling and everything. I have lots of green algeas now. Looks horrible. I am dosing Red Sea NO3 PO4 x to get rid of the high levels of nitrates and phosphates.

I am looking forward to the Atlantik lamp. I am kind of a gadget freak, so I am looking forward to play with the setups in the software that is included. Orphek said that they would pre-program 8 different setups so that will be exciting.

Thanks :)

What are your nitrate and phosphate readings currently? The Redsea product had a big launch in the UK when it first came out. But there wasnt much positive response, so if you can document your progress with this product that would be nice for other hobbyists.

I shut down my tank during the summer due to illness and almost quit completely but a few weeks ago just started again.

I currently have 25ppm nitrates and about 0.4ppm phosphates.

I am trying to reduce the nitrates using Vinegar...its been a slow process but it seems to be coming down.

So I would definitely be interested in knowing your results.

I checked into the specs of the Orphek Atlantik and it looks very good on paper. So it would be interesting to see how this does over your tank.

With respect to gadgets; I completely understand your fascination. :lmao:

I couldn't find my test kits, but finally I found them. The nitrate reading was 10 ppm. Didn't find my phosphate test. The Red Sea NOx and POx must be working. I thought I would get a much higher reading than 10! I'll test the water today or tomorrow and see if it has decreased. I haven't changed any water since the last reading either.

I can't wait to get the new lamp. Now I only have 2 x 54 w over the tank.
