"Faz I think I would have made my vats a little deeper"
I am guessing to help with water stability? Temperature and nutrients?
"I would have also put a viewing pane on the side."
That is not as easy as it sounds, we are thinking rubber liner tanks. I'll have to do some thinking here.
"As for equipment I would not buy Schuran calcium reactors."
We are thinking that a 2 part solution done manually until we figure out the rates of consumption and then use a 55 gallon barrel for top offs. I am hoping to get some buffering from the sand but I am sure we will need a lot more.
"I would never waste my money on wave2k's."
I have been playing with some Carlson surge buckets. Low cost, at least for starters.
" I would diy my high dollar rk2 skimmers."
Calfo has some plans for air blown skimmers. Since your blower is offline, would you use air driven or make a venturi version?
"I would buy tunzes from the start."
I should keep my eyes peeled for some used ones to start out.
" I would make my gh bigger."
Somehow I fear that no matter how big you make it, it will always be too small ;o)
"I wouldn’t waste my time or money on phyto and all the equipment that goes with it."
This is interesting. I too am on the fence with this, and with space being at a premium, I don't want to do anything that is not value added. I was thinking of using both Phyto and Rotifers. Did you do any testing to see if there is any substantial growth or was the stuff just too much of a hassle? I have been SUPER careful to not cross contaminate the tanks but I have still had the roti's get into he phyto and eat it till it turns clear. Would you think there would be any value in making a home brew food with a large percentage being almost liquid assuming that many animals would be filter feeders or meat eaters? Or do the damsels do a good enough job? I was thinking about using salt water mollies so they will reproduce and even make a possible source of trade bait.
Thanks for your input. This kind of info is priceless.
