I stuck the mangrove pods in the return waterfall just to see what they would do :smokin:
The mangrove roots do not have any substrate other than some polished oval stones that I bought at Lowe's

hey redox,

What are you using for the rsdb?

Have you always had it in the system or was it added later down the road? Notice any positive changes?

rjsilvers that's funny you asked that. I was thinking just the other day that the rdsb was the root of my algae problems. I am thinking about removing it from the system.

But isn't the RDSB supposed to lower nitrate? I would really like to see someone do a real test of DSBs on controlled systems. In all of the reading I have done on them, I have yet to see it proven that they reduce nitrates. The theory is sound but you might need to have an entire beach of sand to make an impact.

The colors are really popping on these things. Are you doing any shading yet? I have heard some folks trying blue shade cloth and blue filter paper to try to bring out good colors.

Keep it up.

Faz

fazgood yes maybe they do but I added my rdsb just because. I never had a nitrate problem. I still don't but something was and still might be causeing algae , I never had it before. I have reduced my water change frequency because of .....no time left in the day. I also had a malfunction with several r.o. membranes that cost big bucks .Yours truly had too eat it:mad: D.I. resins work themselve out as well:mad: . But lets move on:) I am finding less and less time in my day too maintain the gh. I have concidered shutting it down due too my my work overload and the present economy. The power bill don't grow on tree's:mad2:

Please let us know what your results are if you decide to remove it.

I was thinking of adding one to my 180 thats cycling right now but I've read a lot of differing opinions on the usefulness of it...

Dont shut it down!!!! This is the coolest thing ever and you'll miss it the day it is gone and everyday thereafter. Plus if you do I'll have to mortgage my house buy it from you and set it up in Greenville, NC.

nauticac4 I hear ya:D Its not just the cost of the whole gh thing. In my bussiness I use diesel vehicles. My fuel bill has been over 1000 dollars every month. It has slowly put a hurtin on me but is now starting to catch up with me. I will hold on as long as I can. If the fuel companies would just give me a slight break. Maybe I should contact Exxon for a coral study grant:lol: If we could come together as a country and boycott those sob's maybe they would drop those rediculous prices. They say diesel might be over seven dollars before its over. Well i'll be out of bussiness:mad:

inpressive beautiful setup/fish/corals.
just wanted to let u know i really enjoy watching at your pics.

Thanks dor sharing. :)

Cold water into an r.o. is not very efficient, everything is sweating from the water feed temperature that is colder than normal

If you have not addressed this Issue, I may have a solution for you.

Go to your local hardware store and buy a 50' or 100' roll of R.O. tubing. Connect one end to your water source and the other end to the R.O. input. Then take the rest of the coiled up tubing and put in the nearest sump or vat.

This will reduce or eliminate the sweating, lower the tank temp (a little) taking some load off the chiller and increase your R.O. efficiency with higher input temps, all at the same time.

Give it a try

BTW GREAT THREAD!

How is the greenhouse doing with the heat? My tanks have hit 82-83 the past couple days, its been 102-105 in the shade on the back porch. The AC cant even keep the house below 75. I can only imagine what a greenhouse feels like.

hot as heck

hot as heck

Out side temps have broke records but that 3 ton chiller barrel is doing what it supposed to. I havent seen my water temps go over 80.6 but have seen the inside temps at 113 today. My evap rate skyrockets on these kinda days. WAGERJA Thank you for your response but this only happens in the winter . It slows R.O. production as the best water temp for R.O.'s is around 70. You are right having a coil would give the water some time to warm. The only problem with that is it would take a long coil to accomodate for the large volume of water this R.O. needs. The coil would have to be void of light as well and also be sanitzed from time to time. Sounds like more work than I have time for:rolleyes: Maybe black pipe put in in such a way as to bennefit from the solar gain and only run the R.O. durring the day. In the summer it could be by-passed and drained. That seem's easy:D
