And how:eek2: Congrats mr. 1000 post. I am shooting for 2000 as we speak;)

I didn't even notice...thanks for pointing that out. I need to start a reverse photoperiod also...keep us updated on if the pH improves anymore.

Wow, what a read. Very impressive thread and gh. I wish I had known about this earlier. I did a 3 months internship at the NC aquarium in Manteo and would have loved to visited your set-up

Hey,

Made it through this thread for a second time and I am still learning stuff. Great job and thanks for sharing. I am getting real serious about a greenhouse and you have saved me a bunch by posting the history like this. We have drawn up plans for a GH very similar to yours and will start construction in about 3 weeks. Hope to have it done in June if all goes well, at least the shell.

I'd love to visit sometime to see things first hand and steal some more braincells. Are there things in the area for the family to do? I already talked the wife into a trip to Chicago for IMAC and I think she may consider NC if I can keep her shopping.

Couple of questions,

If you were starting over today, what things would you change?

If you started over today, what things would you keep the same?

Kind of open ended questions I know...

Well we have emerald green water and 30 miles of white sand beaches . Offshore fishing is awsome. Scuba diving(some of the best wreck diving in America). :D And tons of things to see and go do.

Faz I think I would have made my vats a little deeper. I would have also put a veiwing pane on the side. As for equipment I would not buy Schuran calcium reactors. I would never waste my money on wave2k's. I would diy my high dollar rk2 skimmers.I would buy tunzes from the start. I would make my gh bigger. I wouldnt waste my time or money on phyto and all the equipment that goes with it. There are other gripes but they slip my mind right now:)

Where have the wave boxes been all my life?

More questions...

"Faz I think I would have made my vats a little deeper"
I am guessing to help with water stability? Temperature and nutrients?

"I would have also put a viewing pane on the side."
That is not as easy as it sounds, we are thinking rubber liner tanks. I'll have to do some thinking here.

"As for equipment I would not buy Schuran calcium reactors."
We are thinking that a 2 part solution done manually until we figure out the rates of consumption and then use a 55 gallon barrel for top offs. I am hoping to get some buffering from the sand but I am sure we will need a lot more.

"I would never waste my money on wave2k's."
I have been playing with some Carlson surge buckets. Low cost, at least for starters.

" I would diy my high dollar rk2 skimmers."
Calfo has some plans for air blown skimmers. Since your blower is offline, would you use air driven or make a venturi version?

"I would buy tunzes from the start."
I should keep my eyes peeled for some used ones to start out.

" I would make my gh bigger."
Somehow I fear that no matter how big you make it, it will always be too small ;o)

"I wouldn’t waste my time or money on phyto and all the equipment that goes with it."
This is interesting. I too am on the fence with this, and with space being at a premium, I don't want to do anything that is not value added. I was thinking of using both Phyto and Rotifers. Did you do any testing to see if there is any substantial growth or was the stuff just too much of a hassle? I have been SUPER careful to not cross contaminate the tanks but I have still had the roti's get into he phyto and eat it till it turns clear. Would you think there would be any value in making a home brew food with a large percentage being almost liquid assuming that many animals would be filter feeders or meat eaters? Or do the damsels do a good enough job? I was thinking about using salt water mollies so they will reproduce and even make a possible source of trade bait.

Thanks for your input. This kind of info is priceless.

Have started to run my calcium reactor effluent through calcite. I have noticed the finnal ph of the effluent is up to 7.5 instead of 6.9

I was wondering about this montipora. It was totally brown when I got it and I think I finally found a good location for it
