If you don't mind me asking a few questions about the DSB drum.
1. approximately how deep of a sandbed did you go?
2. how does the water flow over/through it?
3. did you build something within?
4. do you do any maintenance on it at all, keep any additional inverts in there (sandsifter/snail/crabs)
5. do you provide it with lighting? grow macro algae over it? how much flow are you dumping over it?

Hello wizsmaster The rdsb is made from a 55 gallon drum. 1- the depth of the sand is about eight inches short of the top of the barrel. 2- I feed the barrel with a large rk2 skimmer. 3- nothing but sand (southdown) 4- no maintenance at all ,the sand is clean white inside. 5-no lighting what so ever,it must remain void of light. I use a pcx40 to supply the skimmer with return flow. It is just over 1000gallons/hr @five foot head. The water leaves the skimmer runs across the barrel and then dumps dirrectly into my sps vat. zero or undetectable nitrates, seems to work well

ohk - so water enters in the top of the barrel, and exits on the top as well, doesn't trickle down through the barrel & sandbed to exit at the bottom, right?

Yes, i am. I've had one of the blue medical barrels sitting around for quiet a while ... been meaning to, and saw your thread the other night.
Any idea how much sand you have in there? I've got about 250lbs sitting around, but don't think that would fill much more than the first 12", if at all.
Did you cut the top out?
I'm leaving my top, unless you can give me a reason to take it off.
I am planning on feeding ti through one of the top holes, and draining is through a 2" hole i drilled in the upper side, like it's visible in the pic of your barrel above.

i just got done dumping 11 bags @ 20lbs each in. thats all i have for now .. need to get a GB for dry sand together.

alot of those were recent. real recent.. as intoday. because the mothers started shading the base

If you put a Tee right at the suction side of the needlewheel with a 1/2" airline poking down into the tee, and a gate valve at the skimmer that you can throttle to get the pump to draw the correct amount of air. Then remove the Mazzei venturi entirely, simply cut in a piece of pipe. That thing will foam like you've never seen.
With your skimmer height, you may have to mount the pump up higher. If you could mount it right next to where the venturi feeds into the skimmer that'd be great. Otherwise you may need to force feed the pump with air.

Chris I have been running tests already and have tried many different options. I already know that the pump needs to be higher and have tested it but the new adapter manifold I made positioned the pump about four inches to low. Will try again when time allows,thanks for your input. I always apreciate it I have to replace the media again in my reactor. I wish you were local to me Chris.
