I am looking at an O.havanensis and I want to here the pros and cons of this little Odontodactylus species. I don't have the space for a full peacock so this looks like it could be a good substitute. Any one kept one cough Dr. Roy cough? How is their personality, aggression, lighting, or anything else pertinent?

Thanks
David

Dr. Roy wrote an article about these, it's a sticky on this thread. It's called The virtues of small Odontodactylus species.

pro:its a mantis, its cute, it wont kill big snails

cons: it wont kill big snails, it dosnt get very big, and is easy to accidently kill.

i think i got it right...

It is one of my favorite stomatopods to keep because of the level of activity and interaction. They can do well in a 40 L tank if given gravel and bits of shell and live rock to build a burrow. Negatives: they jump, they are nitrogen intolerant, and they can die if oxygen drops too low.

For an experienced aquarists, they are a piece of cake.

Thanks Ali88, I noticed that thread after asking my question.

Note to self: it might behove you to pay attention to what is going on around you. :)

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Thanks Gonodactylus that is what I was really looking for, active and interactive. The tank will be fully covered and I will add back the skimmer for this tank.
But I think I will wait until after we move into the new house so that the mantis tank won't (hopefully) be on a wonky circuit breaker like it is now.

One last question will O.havanensis make use of a PVC burrow or is it better to let it build its own? I have a killer PVC burrow that was Hairy's for years, God rest his soul.

Thanks
