O-T-Anybody have any other hobbies?

Wow...

Well, I, too, am into cars. I do dabble a bit in the newer stuff, mostly European, and did help build, and drive an Auto-X car ('85 Mars Red GTi, with a '92 16V Motor), but...

I'm into much older stuff, now, for the most part. I am searching for a more fun European ride at present tho; more on that in the future.

I restore older rides, and have an old '68 Bentley, and a '63 Impala Convertible; it's a dual-quad 409/4-speed car, and will pass just about anything but a gas station. I have been asked to leave ESTA for not having a roll-bar in a ragtop. :) (See Bad Picture below; I hate the RC size limit)

I'm in the process of building a car around a '39 Ford BA/Flathead-8 now; I have a set of "Heads" (Combustion chamber covers, to be precise) and a supercharger for it, I just need a chassis. :) Anyone have a '37 Ford Cabrio they wanna sell?

I'm also into music, and Home Theater equipment, old jukeboxes, pinball/arcade machines, beer, cigars, paintball (Also own an AutoCocker, Tipman Pro-Lite, SLII-68, and a Nelspot for my ankle.) and about anything else. As a kid growing up, I also used to be into Model Trains (American Flyer and HO), R/C Cars, planes, and 1 wrecked helicopter...

Oh, and Battlefield 1942, and 2 were fantastic; I'm into CounterStrike Source now, tho.. The newer BFs just don't do it for me..

James-

Not to get into an old versus new, ahem, argument. I've been on both sides of the fence, and my little Yacht has eaten quite a few imports in a straight line.

You can obviously outcorner/stop me, but; I can stop pretty well (Thank you Stainless Steel Brakes), and I'm working on cornering.

What you can't compete with is torque, trust me. And, before you say it, neither of our cars weigh that much more than your ride. (3,650, with me and 1/2 tank of gas at NYIRP)

To steal Suppressive's thunder, my old W-Motor spun the water wheel at JanCen at 515hp/565 ft/lb. torque, and had 85% of it's torque available from 1400 RPM to 6600 when we shut it down. That, sir, is what makes acceleration. :) I'll happily scan timeslips from NYIRP or ESTA.

I've never worked much on the Diamond-Star cars, but did spend quite a bit of time working on Hondas, and a friend used to have a turbo- '96 Maxima (Hand fabbed).

Not to say I don't appreciate little turbo motors; I'm on the hunt for a '06-07 V70-R to go after a few friends with WRXs, but it's not a fair comparison. They're fun, but, they can't make the brute torque/power of old muscle. Once you get bitten, you don't go back...

PS: Tell me when you're @ Lancaster, or somewhere, I'll line up with ya. :)

Part of the fun of small engines with turbos is the experimenting and tinkering behind it. Muscle cars are easy to figure out, there's no ECU to deal with. It's pretty much bigger is better. Small turbos also have a "bang for the buck" appeal. You can get the car real cheap and for a small amount of money raise the boost, upgrade your intake and exhaust and make some serious HP. You can't really do that with a muscle car without getting into the engine or adding some other sort of forced induction. I guess what I'm trying to say is that for the "bolt on" market, you'll get more speed for your money putting parts on a turbo charged car.

I personally like both but I can't stand driving around in a muscle car ingesting all the fumes. You also will RARELY get joy out of a muscle car on a mountain road or at altitude, whereas a nimble turbocharged import will feel like flying a fighter plane.

Torque is great, but so is the never ending pull of a turbo once it kicks in can also be overwhelming when you haven't been exposed to it. After my first major turbo upgrade, it completely shocked me how agressively the car accelerated through the high RPM's.

I've also NEVER broken a drive train part with my import, while my buddy and his Chevelle were constantly replacing tranny's and snapping axels.

I just think there's more depth to the imports and they are more practical to drive around but I can't stand the way the young kids make their cars look with stupid ground effects, spoilers, decals and such. Back in the day, 10 years before imports were popularized, my car was bone stock looking unless you noticed the upgraded borla muffler. We used to drive around laughing at people with stickers on their car, even though my car did get quite a bit faster after I put some stupid stickers on it and painted it a funny color, and then drove around with steel wheels and spare tires.

Kids and house take up most of my time. With both, there is always something to do. Besides that I enjoy woodworking (some of you have seen pictures of my tank stand). I also made some other furniture.

You guys are making me feel old though. When I was 18, my first car was a '72 Chevelle SS and it wasn't an antique then. I'd love to have that old red SS back again. As soon as I ship the girls off to college I'll have get a old muscle car.

 I guess I can also deal with the mid-life crisis buy getting one. As long as I can install the video player for the kids in the backseat it may work. There is probably more room than in my minivan
;)

For what it's worth both grey and black civics pictured at the begining of this post ran high 12's in the quarter mile naturally aspirated. To put it into perpective, a Chevy corvette C5 Z06 with 405hp runs 12.4 in the quarter mile compared to my 12.8... it's all about the science! A lot of respect to both worlds, I also love muscle!

Not arguing I do love older cars. I wasn't even going to argue the corning. I meant straight line. All wheel drive, 450 horse power at the wheels, makes for hopefully mid to low 11s this spring. So i'm not knocking old cars just looking for a little more credit.
