The Vortech tends to be loud when it's off-centered.

Anyone Using a floating magnet cleaner?? I threw in a magfloat and it wasn't powerfull enough to stay connected, or clean anything for that matter. Looks like the algae free at $70 will work on the 1/2" glass. Anything else anyone using?

I bought the Magnavore 4 ER. It's rated for 1/2-5/8" glass. I'm told it's considerably stronger than the comparable Magfloat. Its magnet is even stronger than the Vortech's at 1/2" spacing.

I've always found the magfloats to be a little weak.
However, a warning, I have a stronger small one on my nano and it was successful in scraping the glass as it's so strong.
I think if you're doing light daily cleaning it's ok, otherwise you want to use a hand held one.
I just got some reef sleeves from www.filterguyz.biz - they're awesome. I also bought 100 non-powdered exam gloves on the net to put over the reef sleeves to make them stronger, so I'm much happier being able to stick my arm in the tank more often now!

Let me clarify the above thinking about it. The magnet got a small grain of sand in it when cleaning the bottom.

Yep, that's the worst. I ruined my old 75 gallon like that. I have decided to use less sand, and the sand I use is round, not sharp granules. That helps too...

These might aid in preventing the magnet cleaner from scraping:

Cool Substrate Alternative

 :D

the magfloats aren't bad, it just seems to not have enough power to work on glass that thick. I am really careful down by the sand, most times I stay away from it completely. They are great for an everyday wiping.

I am running 2 vortechs on my 120. if they are off centered they will be loud. when they are centered, you can't hear them.

That's good to know since I am fairly certain I am going to be putting two of these in my 120G as well. I've just about made up my mind to go with the Sequence Tarpon for a return pump. I finally have enough temporary plumbing done to start running RO into the tank today and check for leaks.

Well, I had 36lbs of Fiji shelf live-rock delivered today. It's pretty cool, a couple of large pieces that will be fun to try and fit in and quite a few medium and small pieces. All very nice stuff.
I did start it curing however in the basement and there's been quite a lot of die-off as the whole house was quite fragrant! I had to immediately do a full water change on the curing tub.

So that was a bit of a performance and then this morning I get ANOTHER delivery of rock! I think they may have made a mistake. I could probably use a few more pieces but not another box load!
I'm going to have to get it curing though, I can't leave it in the box. Either that or I'll need to take it to my local store and maybe they'll give me some store credit or something. It's a bit of a shame, it's pretty cool rock. Maybe I'll just get it curing and try and figure out a way to cram it all in!

I'm beginning to think I should have gotten the 120g.....in the 70g tech, with it being quite tall, the aquascaping is going to be quite a challenge.

On a different note, here a few pictures of my 70gal Oceanic Sapphire tank. I recently moved up from a 46gal AGA bow front, and I'm very impressed with the overall quality of the Oceanic tank. My approach to reefing is slightly more modest than some of the tanks on here. I'm in the military so my tanks are confined by budget and my frequent moves. (My bicolor angle fish has lived in three states and moved four times) Anyways enjoy...

Not sure what your definition of modest it, but that looks pretty sweet to me! I hope mine looks as good when complete.

Can I ask what return pump you're using? Also, are you using the standard durso overflow system and do you find it noisy?

No thanks! lol. I used this instead

Finally, someone with a sense of humor. ;) Yeah, I was torn between the flattened blue marbles and Seaflor Special Grade Reef Sand. I went with... drum roll... the reef sand. I spent many sleepness nights debating which one to go with. It was a tough decision. :D

So I have 80lbs of Tonga (not fiji) shelf rock that's been delivered to me instead of the 36lbs that I ordered. Not a bad deal eh? Anyone think I'll fit all that into a 70?
It's going to take a while to cure.....sigh.....
I also got a 45g brute for storing saltwater; seemed like I should join the club.

Well I just upgraded from a AGA 46g Bowfront, so I'm using my old Blue Line 30. As for overflow, I'm currently using the standard durso. The durso itself is nearly silent, however, in order to run return line out of both sides of the overflow box I had to lowwer the durso about 3" more than I wanted which adds some sound.

I had 100 pounds of rock in the 70 gallon before I switched skimmers from a RS-100 to a Tunze 9010. After the skimmer switch I moved some LR from the tank to the 1st chamber of my refugium. I did this to make more caves in the tank. The tank looks better with less rock in it. I would estimate I might have around 80-90 pounds of rock in the tank now.

TOO FLY- Keep in mind I only have that Red Sea Reef Base in the back and sides of the tank. The front is BB. I would say I only use about 3 pounds of sand in the 70.

I put about 80lbs or so in this weekend. It is a little cloudy so when the dust settles I will post up some pics.

Uh, I don't think so. Sorry. Tech Tank owners only bro. I'm kidding. :p I don't see why not? Isn't the Ultimate Series basically a Tech tank with a different brace, overflow box and clear silicone?

BTW, here's my 120 sitting in the storage... I mean sun room that's soon to be the kid's play room. :D

Pretty much, I get beleved edges but I get a center brace. I also have black silicone like you guys have

Heres my 156 that I finally got. Because of the wait, the lfs owner felt bad and gave me 200 instore credit. Cost of this tank witha 40 breeder was 401 after tax......believe that!

Yes I was super happy

Cool, look forward to seeing it. I can't wait to get mine going, this is taking forever.
My 80lbs would be fine, but it's almost all shelf pieces, so I'm going to have LOTS of platforms and caves I think. I do have regular rock currently in the 36g I'm replacing, so I guess I'll just see what I have left over. At least I'll have lots of aquascaping options!
Did you go for a DSB in the end?

Question for you 120g tank guys....

Which pump did you use for your return? I am thinking the 9.5 mag. I don't want too much flow through the sump.. but more then my 5.5 now has on my 75.
