Oceanic Tech Tank Owners Thread

I was thinking of making one of the holes a closed loop. One drain would go to the sump, the other into a cloed loop. My thinking is 600 gallons an hour for a sump is good. On the other hole if a pump is pulling the water through it and not just gravity, you should be able to get more than 600 gph.
I would like your thoughts and comments on this please

Marty

The returns on the 120 Tech are rated at 600 gph each. I don't think you want that much, though. If you're looking for flow, use powerheads. I'm using an eheim 1260 on my 120 Tech. It works out great. Some people even use an Eheim 1262, but I've heard they have to throttle it back somewhat.

Remember, you can only force a finite amount of water through the overflow.

In theory, your idea may work. I've read that these overflows will handle more than 600 gph, but I've not personally done any testing. Head pressures and forcing flow rates are forces not to be messed with, in my estimation. Someone with alot more plumbing experience, please chime in here!:D

I think it's a bad idea. The overflow box will only handle X amount of flow. This is determined by the the amount of space between the overflow teeth, the surface area. In a 120 I'd imagine that the combined drain, ~500-600gph, and the amount of flow you'd want in a tank that size would be more than the limit of the overflow itself. This would cause the water in the tank to rise over the overflow box, a bad idea.

Try not to complicate the setup any more than it has to be. I understand the desire not to have any powerheads in the tank, I just got through pulling out my over the back closed loop and replacing it with a maxijet mod. While the closed loop was great, it had good random flow provided by an OM 4way, it just complicated the servicing of the setup.

Excuse me for jumping into the middle of your conversation,

But have any of you Oceanic tank owners been able to get Oceanic to customize your tank dimensions? For example, I want a tank deeper than 24.5" (front to back), and I'd like to get starphire on 3 sides not just 2....

Will they work with you, if you order your tank through a retail pet store? Or is it stock models only?

thanks

You should look into a custom tank then. I'm ordering an A.G.E. tank. Check them out:

A.G.E.

Contact Tom. He'll put you in touch with online vendors and you can even try your local LFS as any retail shop can sell AGE tanks. They do not sell direct to the general public.

I'm shopping the tanks right now, Oceanic and these owners on this thread really have my attention!

My other option would be a rimless tank, just not sure what custom vendor I can afford!

How large of a tank? From what I understand, some of the custom builders won't make some of the smaller sizes. Too bad you aren't closer, I'm selling a three sided low iron Oceanic Tech 120 now.

Hey TOO FLY, what size are you building from A.G.E?
What about your stand, from them as well?
Mind if I ask what the quote was?
I'm working on the specs to send them via my LFS and I'm worried they will break my budget...I haven't decided on my size yet, 75gal - 120gal...somewhere in there.

But I'm also going to compare my options with this beautiful Oceanic Tech 120 Black tank, I love it! I bet the prices is eaiser on me as well, but I will still weigh my options.

So far of all tanks I've seen there are 4 I really love...

1. ELOS 120 system - rimless
2. A.G.E custom tanks - rimless
3. Oceanic Tech 120 - in Black - open top
4. Glasscages.com custom tanks - rimless

But I believe my budget is only going to be able to handle 2 of those...just have to see.

I got a preliminary quote from A.G.E. for the equivalent of an Elos 160 XL (size wise that is, 60 x 30 x 24 or something like that).

$3600 plus $600 to ship to my zip code.

Yeah, bummer. I'm selling a Tech 120 in black, brand new.

I don't know that I should post prices on this thread. But I will suggest that you drop Kingfish John an e-mail. I'm ordering a 72 x 32 x 24, which is roughly 238 gallons, with a powder coated white aluminum stand. He's been great thus far, a little busy, but great nonetheless. I'll send you a PM.

Canarygirl,

PM coming.

Thanks,
Paul

No. I believe he owns a shop and sells tanks for A.G.E. They don't sell direct to the public. You've got to go through an LFS or online vendor. But as I said before, Kingfish John has been great to work with.

I'm not putting the tank where I originally planned to. The 120 is as big a tank as I could put in that spot. SOOOOOOOOOO... the wife agreed that we should move the TV and put a larger tank in its place. She knows me all too well. Then I thought about upgrading later and the hassle it would be and the ball started rolling from there. Plus these guys with the 180+ tanks put the seed in my head. :D

So did you ever setup the 120? And now you are just glowing with 180 thoughts! hahaha...thats cool.

I started with nano 30gals, and now I'm pushing my budget at 120gal...hope I can afford it. Might have to take a 2nd job to just fund my project! hahaha.
