Thanks to all that have replied to the tank prices. I guess the search continues to find a decent price locally. At least I know the ballpark what I'm dealing with. I'm jealous of those that already have one :p

I just took the plunge myself. Ordered the Tech 70 series cherry tank and stand. Very excited! I'm thinking that this will finally be the tank that I'll look at without thinking about what kind of better tank I could get.

Anyone know what the internal dimensions of the 70 stand are? I want to fit as large a sump in there as possible. I was thinking maybe a 40 gallon breeder, but I doubt it would fit.

120 Tech overflows

120 Tech overflows

I recently bought and setup my 120 tech (pics soon).

I cant seem to get the durso style overflows properly adjusted. THEY ARE VERY LOUD. Any tips/tricks to get this right ?

FYI: 1.5 inch water drop, constant height level in overflow box (its NOT flushing, its loud all the time).

Am I overpowering the drains ? Need bigger holes in the top ? Am I creating a vacuum in the sump ?

More about the setup:

Basement Sump (Rubbermaid 55gal)
Basement Refuge (25Gal)
Barracuda return pump
Octopus Skimmer
2x175 MH, 2x65 compacts
2x hydor 4's on wavemaker

FWIW, I paid $1150 for 120 tech tank and stand (Buffalo NY) and another $50 for home delivery.

Considering the prices I've been quoted from the LFS in my area I'd say you got a good deal. Enjoy and hopefully I can post my 120 tech one day.

tech 45 owner here..

i had a 20 long set up that i drilled and after 9 months is cracked putting me in a situation of needing to replace the tank quickly. i went to one of my perfered LFS and the tech 45 was the nicests smallest reef ready tank they had so i went for it. i got the solid oak stand instead of teh tech stand, i dont really like the look of the glass doors so this is great. topped it off with a current USA outter orbit 150 mh w/ dual compact florecent actinic's.. all out the door for 1000. filtration is a custom ten gallon sump with a fuge in the center, pro clear 75 skimmer and a phosban reactor using a 600 minijet to feed it and a mag 3 return pump, in the tank are two korilia 1 power heads..

i love this tank, its about the same size as my 32 inch tv and usually more interesting.

stock is a mix of mostly sps some lps and some mushroms and zoos.
several variaties of montipora
acropora
brain's
finger leather
green star polyp
porities
two clown fish
layretrail anthias
randallis goby

scarlete and blue leg hermits
astrea snails
nasaruas snails

not sure if can link from another forum but i will try

I have a 70. Do not have the black stand that it normally would come with but a wooden stand. internal dimensions are 35.5" L x 17" deep.

Try OC Aquatic in HB. I think their price is in the high $700's.

Thanks for the heads up, but I don't think the place you mentioned is near me as I'm in Northern CA. The best price I've gotten so far is $755 for the tank only.

Re: 120 Tech overflows

Research the "herbie" method in here.

Basically I took the durso's off the standpipes that come with the megaflow kit. Since they are adjustable its super easy. ONe gets submerged, the other sit above the waterline. This eliminates the gurggle. You need to add a gatevalve to the line that is submerged at the sump. With this you can control the level in the overflow box to eliminate the waterfall noise. Dead quiet, and so easy. You will only be running one drain, the other a s a backup. So its rated at 600 gph, but youll get closer to 900 gph with this set up. MY return is about 700 gph with head loss and my gate valve is choked back a bit.

But research it first. Search "ultra quiet drain"

Good luck

Where did you get the $755 price in NoCal? I have been calling around and the pricing I've been getting is higher.
TIA.

The one I got that price from is Atlantis aquarium in Union City, CA. I've called 3 stores so far, and the prices range from $750 - 960 :eek1:

Are these prices for the 120g Tech Tank only or does this price include the cabinet also?

Tank only.

Re: 120 Tech overflows

Do you have pictures and details of how your basement sump is set up? I'm doing mine in the basement as well and have a DAS EX-2 Skimmer, 70G Rubbermaid with 200lbs of live rock, and a 29G refugium. I haven't figured out the return area yet or what pump I'm going to use. I just got my 120G Tech yesterday and am heading to Home Depot this morning to get materials to begin building the stand.
