Oceanic Tech Tank Owners Thread

Larry, that aquascape is awesome. I was planning on getting rock from Marc, but I've had two opportunities to pick up established rock with corals and couldn't pass them up. I now have about 350lbs of rock with lots of corals to go in my 120 but the 120 still sits empty since I've had to build stands for the sump and temporary housing for all the rock and corals.

I currently have a 70G Rubbermaid stock tank filled with most of the rock that will be my sump. I've got my DAS EX-2 skimmer running external to it, a 20G refugium that also temporarily has some rock and coral plumbed to it, and 6 T5s over it. Hopefully, I'll be able to get started on the stand for the tank next week.

Everyone's tanks look great...this thread is pushing me to order a Tech. I really like the size of the 70g, but I just cannot figure out a good light for it without constructing a canopy. T5s seem like the obvious answer to me, but there isnt much that can get that deep in 36" length (ATI is really the only one). I think 2x250s is a waste, but is 1x250 enough? Maybe I'll just go with the 90g and avoid this headache. :)

The problem with the 70g Tech tank and T5's is that the opening in the top of the tank is only 12" wide and 30" long. The euro brace is about 3 inches wide. I am planning on a single 250w mh with 2x39w T5 for supplemental actinic.

Dedfish:
Yeah I realize it would be limited to 6x39 T5s, which is generally just over 12" across. Are you constructing a canopy? Did you get the tech stand? Thanks...

I did not get the tech stand. I am in the process of building a metal stand for my tank. I'll be constructing a canopy but I want to finish the stand work before I start that. I have a Sunlight Supply 4x39w retro with individual reflectors and that is 12 wide.

Yeah the ATI powermod is actually 13.5" with the 6x39...oops...that overshot doesnt bother me though. The huge waitlist, however, is a problem.
Do you think a single 250 in a lumenarc mini could cover the whole tank adequately? I really want to maintain an open top look.

Thanks nattydread, Frags pay off after they start taking. I would like to try to redo my drain line to keep it quite at some point.

^ I'd be interested in some ideas as to what people are doing to quiet the drains. With my sump, I can only fit a 90 at the bottom of the drain. I might try using pool tubing but I'm not sure how much that would help.

On a side note...how high is everyone keeping the water level in the overflow?

All you need to do is this:

The only noise I hear is my fuge tricking back into the sump.

Are us using a Calc reactor, or just Kalk?

I cant decide when and if I need one. I just bought a bunch of new frags.

Cool to see some updated pices and progress of everyones tank. I want your skimmer Joe :) Here is a couple of pics of my tech 120, its 10 months old with a current USA fixture like Joe's but with gman bulbs. Not a good time to take pictures of my tank as my Vortech is working at reduced speed because of the power supply and cooler weather making me stick the only heater I had available in the tank :(

You want my skimmer, I want your tank!!!!!:D

Joe:cool:

I ran a reverse durso from my drains into the water. This was to quite the drains but also to slow the flow into the sump a bit. here is a video of before....

Mesh/gate valve modded Octopus 110. This thing is friggin' sweet (just got it a week ago and the shock and awe of a good skimmer is still there  ). I'd definitely recommend it if you're in the market for a new one.

I'm just running a PM Kalk reactor right now. It has worked wonders on my tanks keeping ph, phos, cal. and alk. in check. I do have to add a two part solution also.

Good luck with the new frags, keep that calc. up to about 420-430 and alk. at about 10-11.5....

I was using a ProClear 150 and it didn't do anything. I tried it because they're a local company and everyone in town has them in stock. The Octopus pulled more in one day than the proclear did in a week.

FLOW! (I know, this is a side note)

A good skimmer is totally worthless without good flow in the tank and the overflow. I found that out the hard way when I had two pumps go bad on me. Within 2 days I was skimming about nothing. By the way, I switched back to 3 MJ 1200's (on a 72 bow) because I've had a Koralia 3 break a shaft (they've since gone to metal shafts instead of plastic) and 2 SEIO 1100's get internal shorts (thank God for GFCI). I've never had an MJ go bad on me and I don't have a problem with laminar flow (I think that's what you call it) when I aim the pumps appropriately. My anemone sways back and forth nicely and there's always good turbulence in there. So, is it just me or are MJs not just fine?

Can anyone with the 45 Tech comment about the Oceanic sump that fits that stand? I'd like to upgrade to that tank but not sure if the stock sump is the way to go.

Of course, no LFS in the area has the tank, so I'd be buying sight unseen.

Thanks.

The Oceanic Model 1 Sump does NOT fit in the stand (it is 24" wide and so is the stand).
