Official Borbonius Anthias Thread

Well it's been about a month and a half. Wondering if my Borbs will ever come out. They are looking really healthy and feeding aggressively but only in the dark or ambient room light. As soon as they first blue light turns on they are gone under the rockwork. I can see they are active in the tunnel system but they don't come out into light....

It's the weirdest thing. I try to entice them into the light by feeding all sorts of goodies a few minutes before the lights turn on. They feed very aggressively then the minute the first supplemental blue light turns on they go into hiding. Then when the lights go off at night they come out almost immediately to feed and mingle. I wonder if because they are deeper water that they will hide from the light in my intricate tunnel system only to emerge when the light is gone?? Hopefully not ... Don't understand other people's come out right away apparently. Any ideas?...

Well just to update... I got the Borbs to regularly come out into the light by feeding the minute before the lights come on. So they have to either eat in the light or not. Also I would feed the minute before the next set of lights turns on so they get used to the transition to full lighting. Now they come out under the all the lighting which consists of led t5 vho and halide. Also they aggressively feed.

I finally got to join the club last weekend with these two fine specimens. They are eating well and swimming in the open the majority of the time. There is a bit of aggression but it only lasts for a couple of seconds.

In QT tank.

Borb Season is once again upon us looks like similar pricing to last year. Thinking about snagging one but a little nervous as I have read the whole thread.

1. No one seems to have had one longer than 4 years.

2. Aggression can play a major issue.

3. Bad shippers and I live in the frozen tundra.

I've had my pair for almost 2 years. Aggression has never been a big issue but the larger (barely) of the two occasionally does she's the boss; nothing serious, however. I believe, as with most species, adding them together, while young is the best method...the only method I'll use. While unlikely an option with these fish, purchasing from a LFS, from a tank they are in together makes cohabitation that much easier. I have 4 pearly Jawfish in my 115g nps and they not only got along well from the start, they spawned within 8 months

O. borbonius didn't appear in the trade until roughly late 2008, at which time they were retailing at $3,000 each, so not many people were willing to splurge. It wasn't until late 2010 when they were collected in larger numbers, at shallower depths, when their prices dropped considerably to even $80 each. Unfortunately most of those specimens came in in terrible shape. In other words, most people haven't even had the opportunity to keep them for four years. However I know of several that have been around that long. I've personally had mine for two years and he's still growing. I expect a long lifespan from this little beauty.

2. Aggression can play a major issue.
Very true... all anthias are technically groupers, and this species can really show that in captivity. They'll take massive mouthfuls of food and certainly establish a hierarchy not only among themselves but with all tank inhabitants. With that said they're still more passive than most aggressive fish such as angels, triggers, tangs, etc. IME.

3. Bad shippers and I live in the frozen tundra.
They're a relatively delicate fish, and if not pre-conditioned they will have a much tougher time shipping. You'll start to see some come through Divers Den soon which would be a great place to pick them up from. I would not recommend purchasing these fish from places with less than desirable track records. The extra money you pay from DD will most certainly be worth it.

Finally!

Finally!

One of the first SW fish that I ever saw after googling around with the idea in my head that maybe I would like to set up a reef tank (I knew absolutely NOTHING about the hobby including FW at the time) was the Borbonius Anthias and I immediately fell in love. I am a circus clown by trade (NOT a birthday party clown, not that there's anything wrong with that....:uzi:) It was pretty obvious what my attraction to this fish was.
Today I "joined the club" thanks to Tiapan who has contributed to this here thread. I read through the whole thread last night in anticipation of my new acquisition, lots of great info here, thanks to all.
I just finished my new build, my first "real" set-up and my MUST HAVE fish list is now complete:
Redfin Waspfish
Midas Blenny
Flame Hawk
and now finally the Borb.
My only regret is what will I long for now....
Anyway, it is being dripped as I type, pictures to follow...

I feel the love buddy. Thanks so much. I hope you enjoy your new addition.

Reading through 514 posts.....you deserve the Borb after that. lol

Welcome to the club Fesso!

I got my first Borbonius a couple weeks ago. They are one of the few fish that I have coveted for many many years. I was fortunate enough to get it for about $80 from a place that was importing them from overseas. I picked up two at the time. These were still in their bags from the flight from overseas which was in part the reason for the lower than usual cost. Both went straight into my 500 gallon reef display that has been established for well over 10 years. Unfortunately one of them hasn't been seen since but I knew that was a risk going in and given the low cost, I was reasonably comfortable with the gamble.

The good news is that the second one is doing great. He's not bothered by my strong LED lighting and is usually out all day long but stays near one corner of the tank. He's slowly venturing further out into my display. It's an absolute pig too and has even grown some over the last couple weeks. Much to my surprise, he competes with my giant tangs just fine despite his little (less than 2") size. This fish has quickly become one of my favorite fish out of the nearly 50 or so fish in my tank. I'm giving serious consideration to rolling the dice with a couple more if I can get them at around the same price. I will be making a call later today to see if there are more in route.
