thanks Johnathan,
i was wondering 2 things 1 was how you made the cut, but now i see the flange at the bottom of the cup (good call). and the other is the angle, it looks about 30 degrees or so, is that right?

Dale
you seem to have a good handle on the temp effects. do you think the skimmer effects are minimal with a low temp tank also? 50 degree water 70 room temp comprable size as Johnathan'sset up.

Comparable size? 1000 G tank with many many hundreds GPH through the skimmer?

Honestly, the air temp from compression and expansion is a negated thermal load. (The amount of energy to compress the air is the same amount given off during expansion - conservation of mass and energy) The thermal load from using warm air and that induced by the heat of the air pump would add to the water. That addition would be proportional to the amount of air added and the amount of water diffusing it.

Dale, I have no idea what you just wrote...how about some layman's perspective? Al I can input is that the tube carrying the air to the skimmer is VERY warm...

Shawn,

Thanks for asking...One Yellow eye Kole in QT after having been severely bitten and lacerated by another yellow eye Kole. Major personality issues!

Foxface continues to be shy but will come out occassionally and tears a hunk of HA and runs. Blue eyed Kole only seen about once a day for about 30 seconds...it is very reclusive. Heps stick together and eat a lot of algae. yellow (Haw)stick together and taunt the maroons. Yellow (Phil) is very gregarious and tries to hang out with various other fish that really don't care about it...

Wrasses seen for short periods and are eating algae. All tangs spend a great deal of time grazing and socializing. Purple is fun to watch but also fairly agressive.

Cleaner shrimp are rarely visible. Just not like smaller tanks wher ethey have nowhere to hide. In my tank they can seek refuge all day long. Harlequin is indeed bizarre to watch. Only visible when lights are low. Couple clams look good. One does not have much of a mantle. 1 Large Feather is splendid, 1 is, well, NOT. Can't find the small feathers....

Flame scallops are boring...they just sit there. Lawnmower is very alert and keen on people watching.

All looks OK. had a flood last night...I really have to get my sensors hooked up! I accidentally left one of the drip lines on and it filled a large tub and overflowed. That drew water out of the system which then was replaced by RO/DI. That lowered salinity and the skimmer went crazy and filled it's bucket and overflowed. Water, water everywhere...

Thank ME for doing the fish tank beforeI remodelled the downstairs area!

That was for Yourfishman.

It means that the amount of heat added due to compression is equal to the amount of heat released due to expansion. (Example: 70 degree air at 0psi will be 90 degrees at time of compression at 2psi - 90 degree air at 2psi will cool to 70 degree air at 0psi) Those numbers are fictitious, but representative. Think of a gas bottle - when you vent it off quickly it frost up at the nozzle. That is due to the rapid expansion of the compressed gas. That expansion released energy in the form of heat.

All of that being said, does not account for any heat added by the pump itself. However, your own measurements confirm that the heat transfer is not into the water in the skimmer.

My Fox Face was shy for the first 4 months I had him in. But my Maroon Clown was tank bully, I removed her, and the fox came out and around in about 2 weeks. Now he swims damn close to my hand... uggg... Just remember, watch the spines on the top fin, the Fox Face can sting you....

Dale, Interesting point. SO are you saying that although the airline is very warm, that may be where the heat is dissapating? I have about 10' of airline going to the skimmer, and part of it is submerged.

richfavinger I would expect the maroons to be the bully type and I think that was going on at the LFS, but in this tank they rarely leave the anemone for more than a few seconds and the Foxface has taken up residence about 7' away.

I did see the maroons tussle with the harlequin shrimp. It was for some reason drawn toward the BTA and bot maroons charged it. The female actually grabbed/bit it and finally the shrimp got the message.

he taalks prretty dont he.;)

Dale no compressed air in my set up. it just all that room temp air giong though a down draft skimmer with 1400 gph of water. im expecting it might make a chiller work twice as hard as with out the skiimer. to keep the water tmp down at 50

Anyone following this thread with experience removing ricordia from rock please chime in with some advice. I have to get them off that rock with the yellow sponge as they and the rock itself are being devoured by what i believe is a boring sponge.

If you like fish fights get an eel. You see them as they eat the agressive fish:uzi:

I got a snowflake eel a few weeks ago. First week it ate my firefish. I started to feed the heck out of it to prevent further damage. By third week I had a breakout of flatworms. I slowed the feeding down to normal levels and it ate my gobie. So I tore my tank down and cought it (after failed attempts at fishing). I then treated my tank for flatworms. So now I am in the process of "restocking". Tomorrow my daughter and I are going shopping :)

mrcrab Doesn't matter to me. After reading those articles and a couple of threads I am going to pluck those suckers off and let them attach to some rubble...BIG experiment!
