Speaking of updates. I'd love to see some recent full tank pics. I've been following your thread from the beginning and am anxious to see how it looks at this point.

If you need someone to take some pics I'm only 40 miles away or so and I have a very wide angle lens that should fit your entire tank in one frame :jester:

Well come on over! :D I have a decent 35mm but no wide angle, and a decent digital but no real wide angle or macro...I can't believe my dumb luck.

I have to do some clean up in the viewing room to get a better angle but I can do it anytime. PM if you really want to come by!

Thanks for the offer. I was only half serious but I would love to see your setup. My Tank To Do list is still pretty long and I have a busy week this week. I might be able to make it over next week. I am self employed and work modest hours so I am pretty flexible.

I still have to get my calcium reactor up and running, particularly since I have recently gone from the 3 SPS that I had in my 90 to 9. So they are going to be calcium hungry. I need to put the doors on my stand and canopy and put on the finishing touches. I also added a Desjardni Sailfin Tang and a GoldFlake angel (pics to come on my thread). They are already settled in and eating nicely. And I still need to clean up my old tank so I can sell it.

But I should have most of that taken care of by next week. I'll PM you when I know my schedule next week.

-Greg

Whew! Just skimmed all 45 pages of this mega-thread. Great reef, Jonathan! A great inspiration to us newbs.

Thanks for the kind words. I certainly don't think of myself as an inspiration when I think about all the great reefers here on RC and some of the people who truly contribute to advancing reef keeping!

Well I took Marc's advice and tried standing my camera back a bit and using the "macro" feature. It worked much better and I found out that the viewing screen may show a blurry picture but the picture taken actually looks fairly good. So here are my first attempts at macro shot, without a macro lens! :D

This is a shot of some "new arrivals"...I believe that these are nerite eggs, but I don't have enough knowledge to confirm that. They have the appearance of a slice of a hard-boiled egg and I have watched a turbo glide over these showing that they are quite flat. It's hard to see in this photo but the 'eggs" have a distinct outer skin and what clearly looks like a yolk. Very cool to see and I will update as these progress.

I know this is a horrible picture but I am really curious if anyone can ID this. It's growing on the underside of a rock and I cannot find it in any literature.

Picture of the infamous ric rock. This one shows a nice variety of life!

Another one showing deep tunnels in the rock and I have circled a baby brittle star.

And this one shows more interesting growth and I have an arrow pointing to a few ricordia "cells" still alive on the rock. These glow very bright under the moon lights!

I took some photos of the SPS I got off this rock but they did not turn out well. I'll try again today. :D

The mystery item may be a Spiny Oyster, commonly a hitchhiker although some public aquariums will set up a species tank to keep them successfully in captivity. My reef has two small ones that just seem to filterfeed nicely.

Interesting thought Marc. It looks to be too fleshy to be a spiny oyster, but since it is fairly small, it's hard to tell. It looks more like one in the picture than in person, but I'll watch it and see what happens. Spiny oysters are cool!

1,000 gallons? DIY mega-skimmer? Custom in-wall display and fish room? All while recovering from a stroke? I stand by my words. :)

yeah well it seems to be more than it is...it took months to get this thing together and I still have a lot more work to do...of course, reefs are sort of a continual hobby right? :D

Some people who know me and were around during the first year after my stroke are very complimentary about it when they get inside the fish room but I wonder how much of that is grease. I suppose since none of them are doing anything like this it seems a bit "black box" to them but I get fairly nervous when I have a real reefer over. I always look at it as a learning experience but it can be tough sometimes.

When someone (like yourself) reminds me what I was a year ago I start to think about when I couldn't read or write or even walk in a straight line, so there is some sense of accomplishment. But take a look at results: I tore out a load bearing wall using supports on both sides. Then I nstalled a 10' x 18" header and built in the tank window. Seems great right? Only now I realize I never let the house back down! So I supported the upper floor by driving in 2 x 6 boards floor to ceiling on both sides. That raised the house maybe 1/2 inch. Then I installed the header and drove in the permanent 2 x 6 studs. Then on went the wall work. So in theory at least, my house now has a "crown" over this header!

When I remodel I'll find out how bad but until then we have carpet so a marble won't roll. :D

One good thing about a stroke: I have the inane ability to just say "***" to crap that goes wrong. I use the same phrase when purchasing stuff too...should have seen my wife's face when she saw the stainless steel refrigerator I installed in the tank room. Or when she saw the bill for the rock...good thing she makes good money!!:D :D :D

Could you take the half inch bow out by using a sawzall? With the long blade, cuting a half inch off each stud, one by one through the drywall. Crazy, but who knows I've done crazier.

Or you could just leave it ;)

No way! Talk about asking for an accident...:D I am totally in the just leave it camp. I don't really know what the bow is either. For all I know it has settled down anyway. The beam is rated for 1/16" flex in my application, and that could be off too.

Don't forget that the tank is installed in the ONLY load bearing wall in that part of the house and is holding up 1,300 sq. ft. of house! Crap, that's scary! :p

You know I am getting a little ticked that every time I post the initials for the World Trade Federation it gets censored! I mean come on guys! :D

Some pics from tonight:

Well, If I told you that...:D

Ctenochaetus Striatus? Could I have the name wrong? Maybe they are really called striped bristle tooth?...I have no idea why they aren't widely available online.

PM sent.

I stand inadvertantly corrected by the Master of the Box Lunch. That is not called a Blue Eye Kole but rather a striped bristle tooth tang...and BTW, it eats detritus...:D :D :D
