What town are you closest to? Since there is really nothing to do there but drink and fall down, I may be able to get away to come visit. It just depends on how far and what the weather is like.

I would like to find out about any other reefers on the way from Denver also if you have any info. :)

Glenwood Springs. About an hour and a half west. The only other reefer I know out that way is Mountainreef and he's been so busy, I have not seen him on line in months. But there is a bunch to see in Denver...

Thanks for clipping that. I just realized that probably wasn't too bright of me. :(

Anyway, I might be able to swing 1.5 hour drive. It would take some negotiation and coordination. I'll let you know how it goes. Any other notable reef keepers I should contact?

Well, all looks good on the reef. I have noticed an increase in speed of growth on several SPS.

Tested today after letting it go for a week:

Salinity: 1.026
Alk: 14.4 dKh/5.14 meq/l (yikes)
Ca: 1500 ppm
Nitrate: 0
Phosphate: 0

So it looks like I need to lower the frequency and duration of my kalk stirrer just a bit!

Hop: Talked to the female unit about visiting and she said it might happen. In fact i might NEED to leave for a while to rest from all the activity that will be going on in Keystone. Maybe my son and I would make a day trip over. We'll see what happens.

Calcium is 1500? That is hard to imagine - it should have precipitated out before it ever got that high. Alk is rather high. A few years ago, many of the hardcore reefers aimed for 13-14dKH to get faster growth, but that was always begging for a disaster.

Agree with Marc on this one... Calcium that high is pretty close to impossible.

Any reason for running your alk so high? I've found better color and growth with a KH around 7.5-8.

crimeny, let's try that again!

Salinity: 1.026
Alk: 14.4 dKh/5.14 meq/l (yikes)
Ca: 435 ppm
mg: 1500 ppm
Nitrate: 0
Phosphate: 0

The reason why the alk is so high is that I adjusted my stirrer after have some precipitous drops in alk a few weeks ago that severely messed with my LPS. So last night I diled it back a bit to try to find 8 - 9 dKh.

I will say that my growth rate definitely spiked during this high alk period. I could clearly see the growth speed up. Interestingly enough, Ca has stayed failry consistent between 420 and 430.

Cool. I'll be leaving March 3rd, but I should be back around the 9th or 10th... Leaving the wife in charge of the tank again:D

lighten up guys, I need time to whack off too! Barry is coming out from Texas and I need to get the glass cleaned up. I am buying a new tank to swap out for my QT. It is a low-sided sump (48.5" x 22") and will be better for QT, snail grow out, and frags. yeah, I just gave myself more work...

Just got back a refurbed Vortech MP-40 and it is, IMO, much better than my original pumps. There are some nice changes that make it much more stable. I'll check temp. tomorrow but so far it is going strong. I am going to get a 5th pump before I send any back for refurb as I don't like being without a pump for so long.

The Tunze 6025 I substituted is crap and when I yanked it tonight, I pulled 127 DIBS Turbo sp. babies out of it. Then it took 15 minutes to get it re-started in the QT. I think I am going to round-file it.

Hop: Good luck with that. By now I think she probably has a good handle on it though. I even let my wife feed the fish sometimes!!! :p

I never let my old lady feed my fish. Hell I barely let her watch me feed the fish. She thought this was going to be a hobby we could do together, then there was the first call where I was at the LFS without her and I wanted to (did) buy a coral and she was like 'well what if I dont like it?' I basically said 'tough tittie' as nicely as I could. Today I bought another tank. A 24g biocube with stand. Now I just have to tell her. Im making my LFS keep it for another few days to buy me some time so I can break the news. It was one of their displays so its not like I could wait on the deal. I had to put my game face on to haggle them down. It worked, I bought it. Now Im stuck buying LR and LS. and fish. damn, what was I thinking?

There is a new Red Sea "nano" coming out that has a nice tank/stand, and internal skimmer. Looks like it will be a fairly nice product.

So Don Nguyen just opened up my Tunze 6025 and found it worn with a broken shaft. Here are the pics:

Worn 6025

A bit strange indeed since I just got the thing. Perhaps it was all the snails messing it up, but it seems unlikely. Whatever the case, this PH does not seem to be up to Tunze standards. :(

So I got annoyed by my 29g Tall I had been using for a grow-out tank and happened upon an extremely good deal from Brian at IAP on a new tank. This was obviously built as a sump, but is ideal for grow out because it has more water volume, low sides for easy access, and chambers for various soon to be discovered uses. :D It also is pre-plumbed with a BH so that I can expand it later. And yes, the bottom is blue acrylic...

It is 22.5" x 48.5" x 10" giving it a total volume of about 47g. I estimate that it is actually holding about 40g based on my water level. So not a huge difference but a better layout. I will have to do something about lighting as well. Although snails don't really need good lighting, I want to have enough for growing macro, and the ability to switch to reef lighting should I need to QT corals in this tank at some point too.

The 29g will either be set up as a sump for this tank, or kept isolated as a true hospital tank.

I still have the twin top-off float switches, one for RO/DI and one for display system water. There is a small heater but since my tank room stays between 78F and 80F, that may never come on. I also transferred over the Prizm, and I know some of you are shaking your heads, but this skimmer has done well for the past year and will be fine with the low bio-load. I can easily upgrade if needed.

Top down:

And some snail eggs that appeared over night after I set the tank up:

Thanks...I need to beef it up with powerheads, lights, etc. but it works well as it is for now. I just dumped in another 200+ DIBS Turbo sp.
