OMG! my electric bill doubled!

Too bad my parents house is a few blocks away. They have no reef tank and their elec bill was $40. If they were next door I would pay for their bill and run 1/2 of my aquariums power from their house so I could double my baseline.

That's depressing Slavearm!
why go to all the trouble and initial expense of 'energy conservation measures' if no real results in form of lower bill?

so, you don't like the energy star swirly flourescent bulbs?

They are ok.... but I have recessed lighting thruout my house. As such, I have to use the swirly thingy with reflectors and they take a good 2-3 minutes to get to normal brightness for a bulb. After that they are fine though.

My next idea.... ENERGY Efficient TV! Seriously though, all of my major applicances that can be gas, are gas, and my gas bill is a whopping 27 dollars.

Funny thing is... in the last 3 months I have:

1. I replaced all my lights in the house to energy saving crap lighting
2. replaced my normal malibu lights with solar units
3. downgraded my pool pump to a smaller unit
4. switched to a super efficient skimmer
5. swapped out 3 mag pumps (9,12,18) and 2-Seios for a single panworld 50px-x and two Tunze 6100 (about 120W savings there), 6. changed my sump lighting scheme (shaved about 10w there)
7. Added a large sump fan so my chiller runs on the hottest days only 20 minutes every 3 hours. (love that ACIII logging)
8. Killed the second refrigerator
9. Added a powerstrip to all the guest rooms that turns everything OFF when there are no guests in the house
10. Changed the blower in my AC unit for a more efficient version
11. Added Thicker Curtains to all sunny facing rooms that remain closed.

And still my bill is this high. Why is SCE so much more expensive than every other Electric company in the whole dang US? Can you tell me that?

F-U SCE F-U.

I did alot what you did and my bill is still higher as well. I used less electricity this year in August and my bill for this month was twice as high to last years. I don't even want to think about Nov. when the the upper tier KwH increases by 50%

I've been OK with the flourescents, actually. I hate the initial flicker, but you get used to it.

Slavearm - you sure your bill wasn't estimated? They do that sometimes.. Just a thought.

As for how they get away with it, well, the PUC ALLOWS them to get away with it! Yet another totally useless governmental organization... Legalized corruption IMO.

*shrug*

Glendale water and power.....$700 every 2 months and run my pool all day and AC at 70 all day....gotta love Glendale (7th safest city of over 100k people in the US)

They make such a device. It's called a BOOK. :D

Reminds me of the energy efficient reef. It's called an OCEAN

it seems like this topic wont die anytime soon!

yeah im worried about my november bill when that comes....

i get somewhere around 15kwh a day for basleine and i figured my 180g tank take about 20-22 kwh a day so that already puts me over baseline alone!!!!

my bill last month was $496 i had a heart attack and now i dont know what to do i have done everything possible to save on this next bill so we will see if it helped at all.... if it gets that much worse i might go back to FOWLR and ditch the halides and chiller

wow and I thought our $250 bill was high. Well I guess replacing all of the high power units have helped alot. I think our bill only went up $65 from last year. We did replace a lot of the electric appliance for newer energy effecient once. We also set all of the thearmostats at 80 and if possible opened the window when possible.

Yeah. Saw "energy efficient" and "TV" in the same sentence and thought about what a dichotomy that was.

Government. Intelligence.

Con gress (OK, so I cheated)

BTW the PUC had the ability to re define baseline about a year ago. They thought they'd just leave it be...

Yay!

If I wasn't going to remodel my house in the next 2-3 years, I would be all over Solar. As it stands, it looks as if I will have to redo a large section of my roof, so I can't really justify it.
Meh... who knows...

My bill was just under $500. I keep the house at 80, but I am home all day. I didn't even spend that much on gas last month. Energy cost are getting out of hand. It may be time to pull a Bundy and spend the rest of the summer at the supermarket.
