One of my saddest days in reefing

Hugo,

To say I'm shocked and saddened by your loss is not really sufficient. Having had my tank killed this weekend from the power outage, despite having battery backup, I can relate to what you are going through. I hope you stick with it, and rebuild when you feel up to it.

Also, I had a neighbor call the cops at 11pm on the third night of running my generator. I told the officer that came to the door that I had a huge coral reef tank and they everything would die if I did not run it. He nodded and asked me if we had kids in the house (we do), and he said ok, he'll talk to the neighbor. So for whatever reason, having kids seemed to matter to him.

I know this is probably poor timing but do you have any pictures of the tank as it sits now?

BTW, tell your neighbor to get some ear plugs or something. Good thing your neighbor don't live next to me or my boys cause he wouldn't need to worry about your generate while he was laid up in the hospital. Cuz you know how we do it down in the dirty south.

Mike

Archie 1709 thank you soo much now my next project is too put two islands iwith a different aquascape

Hugo sorry to hear of your losses, after the pain is gone then you can rebuild. But if I were you, I would move everything to your shop and reset everything up there. Electricity is cheaper and no more hassles. Believe me after working at the shop all day the last thing I want to do when I get home is work on another one. I would also be divorced right now if I had one here at home:eek2: Hang in there bud!;)

Bui,

He has a generator, it's his neighbors and city ordanance that requires him to turn it off due to noise.

see... this i dont understand. the power is out... food is rotting, animals are dying, yet you cant run the generator because of noise?? I cant accept that.

I know this sound mean especially after Hugo great loss but if he doesn't have sense enough to get a generator after a day without power then he deserved to lose everything.

thats kind of rough .... bad karma

Hugo, your tank was amazing and I am sorry for your loss.

But as many have said here a generator is as much a part of a reef tank as a skimmer or heater. Unlike freshwater fish you cannot get away from the need of flow and oxygen to the animals we house. To not have one is irresponsible and the consequences should be expected.

If you DID have one and your neighbor had you turn it off and you listened to them, then shame on you. They would have needed a court order to get me to turn off the machine that was sustaining the live's under my care, and if it had gone that far where you were ticketed for disturbing the peace, you could then sue the neighbor who filed the complaint and the police in the municipality, although it never would have come to that. Noise ordinance does not apply to life saving machinery. Im sure if someone who was being cut out of a wrecked car with the jaws of life a neighbor wouldnt come out and tell them to knock it off as they were trying to nap.

Here in St Louis we have people who still dont have power after 8 days because of storms and damage. My generator went to 4 differant local reefers to keep their tanks alive.

Again, I am sorry for your loss, but ultimately decisions made by you brought it about. Maybe from your loss other reefers can better prepare for emergencies

If you knew Hugo you would know that he is not a confrontational person. Enough said.

That statement doesn't sound to apologetic. I want to know why you would make all the nice comments in the beginning of you post and then finish up by taking a cheap shot at the end. People make mistakes! It is unfortunate that this one cost him dearly.

all you people that are second guessing please put yorself in Hugo's shoes and try to feel the pain he is going thru. these fish and corals were his pets and passion. think about how you would feel if it happened to you. I felt guilty and I still hurt over losing my Hippo tang a few months back. how it suffered and died because of my negligence. Im sure hugo feels 10x worse. I would. perhaps he has noone to blame.. but think about how he feels...

Please understand I was in no way trying to take a cheap shot! But after reading every post here about sueing the electric company, filing homeowners, etc, and thinking about a spectacular tank dying from decisions made, it started to make me mad.

That he isnt a confrontational person is fine, but when there are lives in your care, you need to stand up for them as they cannot.

Im sure Hugo knows what mistakes he made and what was out of his control, but maybe there are those reading this thread out there that will be proactive and prepare for emergencies such as this so it doesnt have to happen again.

I also didnt try to sound very apologetic as there was nothing to apologize for. I'm surprised you think I took a cheap shot, as that wasnt my intention.

I don't sympathize with Hugo, but I do emphathize with him and wish him well in rebuilding.

Not technically a breach of the UA, but bad form still the same, no?

x2. What's done is done. I apperciate Hugo being forthcoming and honest about what happened. He could have been quiet about this and rebuilt behind the scenes. I told my wife about this, and she felt a thousand times better about the generator we recently purchased. It has made me more vigilant as well.

We all need reminders that the best of us can go down and lose everything. We need reminders that we can always rebuild. We need reminders that fragging and sharing corals is important. We need reminders that equipment should come first because your animals depend on it, and we need reminders that we need each other for support.

It takes alot to admit you weren't prepared or you made a mistake.

I agree with stlouisguy.

If he can't run the generator at night, couldn't he just get a big enough UPS so he could get thru the night with some powerhead running and run the generator in the morning.

You could get a decent UPS for around $100 nowaday.

Beside, doesn't he have a fishstore? Could he just transfer the corals over there?

After all say and done...everything is just hindsight now.

I maybe second guessing but I would though Hugo would use better judgment.

Good luck on rebuilding your tank.

As is everything in life, Hindsight is 20/20. If this experience saves just one system in the future, then as least a little bit of good comes from a disaster such as this.

Hugo,
I only know of you from the "Tank of the Month"......it was truly inspirational. I feel so sad for you and I cannot imagine losing something so dear to our hearts! It must be like losing a loved one.......

For those of you who are interested in donating a frag to Hugo lets all put our money where our mouths are.......perhaps we could start a list of frags to be donated and by whom...??

I will offer a bright blue milli frag when he is ready (and if he wants). Just PM me your address Hugo and I will send it your way when you are ready!

If something like this ever happens to you and you lose everything, and you come on here to tell your story, I sincerely hope that not a single person from this forum helps you rebuild. No one deserves to lose everything, that is a horrible thing to say about him.

yes i know waht my mistake was it was that i believe that edison was going to put the electricity on at teno clock like they said an i imagined that nothing would happen because one time something similar happend and nothing happend and now from errors people learn and hope it will not happen again

Hugo, I have some very nice sps, please post when you are ready and I will ship some out to you on me.

Good luck my friend.

There's much more to some of the comments here than this particular issue. I'll only say even if I didn't particularly like someone I'd still not wish this upon them.

Hugo, good luck with your rebuild and with the store to run I'm sure that will be difficult.
