Well, I tried to settle a montipora digitata single stick in a new spot and it broke, hardly any force at all. Maybe it was cracked? Are they really that fragile?
I jammed the top into a convenient hole in the live rock. The base had a lot of down-growth on it, so I just set it on my sand bed, and today the polyps exposed by the break have reoriented upward. So it looks as if it's going to heal over the break. That would make it a quarter-sized piece of montipora flat on a rock.
What will it likely do now? Send up fingers and make a colony? Or encrust the rock? I'd rather have fingers, given 'druthers.
