ORA blue tort under 10k's?

My blue tort lost its original deep blue coloration soon after I got it 6 months ago. The color is a little better, but hasn't come back. It was under 20k's before I got it. It's not my lights is it?

What are your water perams, flow and light in detail?

A lot of factors go into the coloring of SPS.

I know, lots of factors. I was just wondering if anyone had trouble keeping the deep blues with 10k's.

I think everything is on par. I've been feeding more because I was getting some lightening.

Flow is good... constant polyp motion from two clashing maxijet streams.
Lighting as stated below. MH in spider 6" from surface at 7.5 hrs/day

I've sometimes had trouble -seeing- greens without a 20K (not a lot of experience with the blues). The corals still have the green pigments, they're just not reacting as much with 10K light. If my science is right (and that's somewhat sketchy), blue should still react with 10K light.
Like others say, though, there are just so many variables...

I have no problems keeping blues/purples under 6.5Ks.

JB and Twon,

Mine looks about like yours if those pics are accurate. I want it to look like this again?

It's not as brown as it looks in the pic. Super deep blue with a little irridescent green. He had it under 400w XM 20k.

You want the green back in it?

If so, I have found that the tort gets greener under less intense lighting. Certain portions of mine there were shaded by my soli had more green in it.

I think you should look into your nutrients before your lighting!! its possibly that you may be running some phosphate or nitrates causing a dull look in your sps!!

Read through the thread before you start preaching chief :)

Dull is not the problem. I think if anything lack of food/nutrients is reason it lost the deep color and went more pastel.

hey chris,
my sean bennett tort has kept a pretty deep blue color, or actually intensified some under a 150 watt 10k pendant, but i think i am in the same boat as you, i want that more rich full color.... Mine doesn't really have the green hints to it...im hoping my new 14k AC will help, and ill be sure to let you know!

i should also say that since i have been feeding a little more, and myabe throwing in a capful or two or DT's every now and then, i have seen some more intense colors from my corals, or at least, brighter...so that could be partly what you are dealing with...

as said above, the green hints are areas not getting enough/as much light, so move it lower or get higher k bulbs if that is what you are after.

10K should bring out the green highlights on the rims of the corallites as well as 14k or 20K. I've got them on mine, suing XM10K.

Acropora do not feed on phytoplankton, DT's are of no use to acropora.

I do not think that you need to move it to lower lighting levels. I had mine upper mid level of the tank. PAR level were 400-450ppfd on the coral which is pretty strong.

What i was saying was that with the overall increased nutrients in the tank i have seen better colors....i wasn't referring to the use of DT's for trying to feed the corals.....but adding DT's does contribute to the addition of nutrients in the tank...... just clarifying... sorry for the confusion...
