Orange Crush Acan Aggressive to Other Acans?

AcroporAddict

There is no substitute.
I have an Orange Crush Acan that has injured a couple other acans I had next to it. I thought acans were safe next to each other?

Anyone had this experience? Does Orange Crush need a lot of space? Thanks for any help.
Dave

Depends. My LFS owner and I have matching colonies. Mine has never sent out sweepers, his on the other hand has nuked other colonies.

Fascinating. I haven't had a problem with any of my 4 acans declaring war on anything else but I don't have Orange Crush. Does anyone know what triggers sweeper attacks? Does the acan "smell" / sense / detect metabolic byproducts of competing corals and send sweepers in that direction or do the sweepers just randomly emerge and poke about until they find something to wail on?

I have not read up on what actually triggers the sweeper attacks. Althought currently I probably should, as I have an Oulophyllia colony that has declared war. It is attacking a M. spongodes colony near it and has decimated about 3" x 1" section. My sand bed is rather tight for space and I did move these two apart somewhat a few days ago. As soon as I moved them the Oulophyllia increased the length of its sweepers and went right back to the attack on the spongodes. It also had been starting to attack my "Orange Crush" acan colony. I was able to seperate them by a little more and so far it has not resumed attacking it.

Brutal and interesting at the same time. That the Oulo simply reached out further indicates a degree of persistance I wouldn't have expected. Glad the attacks on the acan have subsided. Do the attacks all occur at night?

Similar acans won't attack, orange crush is an enchinata so you can't place it by lords or other lps, only other enchinatas, they are very aggressive and love to eat their neighbors. I give mine a good four inches all around so there's no issues.

Actually no. The one that I described took place during the early evening. Halides were out, but my four overdriven 54W T-5's were still on. Persistance was not quite the words I was utilizing when it was happening, ;)

Yep. What he said. ;)

Echinatas will melt anything that dares be too close to them, and my orange crush has sadly proven this point. Now I have a section devoted to echinatas, call it the Danger Zone. They can be useful for taking out nuisance aiptasia anemones, place you echinata right by them and abracadabra they just go away.

Is the Tyree Agent Orange an Echinata as well? I had that next to my Orange Crush, and they seem to be OK together.

Agent orange and orange crush are both echinatas. I have the agent orange...never put out a sweeper to date. Dunno why....

Danger Zone! That's awesome! I call my echi corner the minefield, because they scorch anything that falls into them... I've lost three Lords to the minefield...
