Kind of new to the Mertens carpet anemone market. Any idea how much would an orange mertens carpet would go for retail?
Thanks.

Ask your LFS to check their stock lists. We see them in the Sacramento area fairly regularly. Usually run in the $80- $120 range

For an orange mertens? I have seen some purplish ones and regular grayish/green go for $150 or so. There is an auction for an orange one that has a current bid of $375 and counting. Lol.
i didn't know orange ones were more common and go for that low.
Thanks for the heads up. I guess I will be looking elsewhere or wait for another more affordable one to pop up.

Mertens pricing is a bit odd. On rare occasions you can find them that come in as "assorted carpet anemones" and you can pick one up for less than $30. If the wholesaler IDs the anemones before he ships them out the price of the mertens usually goes up to $80 - $300 depending on size and color.

Can you share photos? None of the merts I've seen have a lot of color, aside from photos of green ones. I've seen small ones with orange spots, but as they got bigger the spots faded. Furthermore, other merts I've seen that appeared brightly colored -- typically with white or colored spots and/or lines -- became more drab once established.

I don't have pics but if you go to *bay and search for
Carpet anemone, you should see it. When they say orange, it is not entirely orange.

I've seen quite a few locally that are a reddish color, sometimes with the white strips and with the yellow tips on their tentacles. Also see the more drab mustard yellow and olive green on occasion. I think part of the problem is that most wholesalers and fish stores aren't very good at ID'ing these anemones. Many LFS seem to call them all "carpets", including gigs, haddoni, and mertensii. Phil was kind of saying this above as well

Thanks for all you responses. The fact that it doesn't hold color once established or when it gets bigger is something that I wouldn't want to invest the amount of money that this particular one is or will go for. Once the auction is over, I am quite sure it will hit the $450 to $500 mark. I'll pass. Lol.

Yes, that's a lot of money and a lot of hype.

Like Phender and DrDNA said, you may be able to find one for a lot cheaper, but it'll either be misIDed or among other nems. My friend found one mixed in with a bunch of BTAs and only paid about $40 for it.

That one looks pretty common as far as color goes. I would bet it would look much more dull in person. Those pics look pretty blue.

The only carpets I have seen here in central Florida are haddoni. :(

Agreed.
All this talk of Merten's anemones is killing me. Nine years in the hobby in the Tampa area and I have only seen a handful of giganteas and not a single Merten's.

D-Nak there was one just for sale under blue leds / On my face book avatar I used leds to change the color for my benefit not to resale and it looks purple. Customers please ask to see the pictures under white light so you know what you are purchasing. Most re a drab brown .

I'd believe it mertans can be very expensive because they are usually hard to find. This is because they have such sticky feet and once they are attached to rocks it takes a very long time to get it detached and it has to be done perfectly. For this reason the fisherman that collect anemones for distribution usually leave the mertans be because in the time it would take them to remove one from its nook, he could have collected 15 or so haddoni or gigantea.

This is what I've herd from a transshipper that has sent over a few mertans here and there but they do sometimes take requests if you specifically ask for one but I've seen some mertans come in looking like utter poop and others come in and not even need cipro. I currently have two one purple with orange tips in blue light and one striped with orange you can see under white lights this one didn't even need cipro when he arrived.
