hello, I ordered a orangespotted filefish from bluezoo & is due to arrive this friday....29th. the size says 1.5" - 2' going to put him in a 60 gl. refuge that I just set-up with nothing in there but algae, "real" live sand, a few pieces of rock. hopefully it will end up in my 300 gl. when it starts feeding well. any advise ???

Thats very exciting. Do you know if it's eating. Ar you aware of the basic food training strategies if it's not? What foods do you have on hand? Good luck!

PE mysis, brine shrimp, formula 2, flakes & pelets. no, I don't know if there feeding. there is an acropora coral being shipped with this fish! I have done alot of reading on your tread, but any ideas would be appreciated!!

Well, if you have to wean it, Renees thread is the place to go. However, theirs dont take prawn roe and it seams most do. I would get some nutramar ova if you can. I would definitely qt for food training. I would try the roe and turn off the flow. If pthat doesnt work, I would smear formula one gel on acro skeletons and go from there.

Can you attach renees thread?

Hoo-boy...if you end up having to wean the fish, be ready for some work. I've never seen Renee work so hard, but it was kind of a personal challenge (and we both like the species). I kibbutzed, but it really was all her. When these fish are learning to eat, they really don't like being watched, so you either need to hide or watch from a distance. Once weaned, they beg like any other fish.

It sure seems like our fish are odd in that they really don't even LOOK at any kind of roe, but they eat most other foods, even shaved salmon flesh.

Congrats on the fish, and keep us posted.

I did look over the tread....very good info & interesting! e-mailed blue zoo to see if they are eating anything at all at there facility....if not, may need to take some vacation days. thanks for input from you gays!

blue zoo did answer back & said they get theres to eat live brine shrimp & try to get them to eat there brand of food... bza. (which is pellet & powder so to speak)

yes, but a large healthy colony might be okay as long as you keep the OSFF very well fed. I would recommend some type of automatic feeder to feed them every couple of hours and that should minimize the damage they do to corals (provided you have them well conditioned onto prepared foods of course). They don't just use acros for food but also for shelter. They also go after live pods in the tank so if you have a lot of those that will also help deter them.

Once these guys r weened will they still eat acro polyps???

Mine are in a FOWLR and have been for more than a month now.

They have not even seen an SPS coral since!

However, if they had the chance I imagine they would still. It's only natural ;)

where did you get your fish from....were they eating well when you got them??? It seems most people are getting there fish(orangespotted filefish) from divers den. I ordered some goodies (online)to help & maybe speed up the feeding process.

Heyas uhuru! Good to see you.

I agree on the live pods...ours stay fat between feedings by hunting in the macro mats in their tank.
