osmomat and nilsen reactor question

Will the osmomat run/work ok together with the aquamedic kalkwasser reactor, and how is this different than using the calcium dispensor. I assume the myreefcreations nilsen/magnetic stirrer reactor is a similar deal?

I do not know for sure. You may need a 3150.11 Socket set and a bigger pump if more flow and pressure is required. The Calcium dispenser is just a very simplified Kalkwasser reactor that uses the in flow from the pump to stir and mix the kalkwasser instead of any mixing apparatus. The calcium dispenser is the only kalkwasser dispensing system I have ever used other than a DIY system I made some years ago. I think personally I would choose Andy's product if I was deciding between the two brands you mentioned. The magnetic stirrer and low voltage system is going to be far more safe and reliable then the competitors system. I asked Andy and he said that he felt it should work and knew of some customers using them together.

Just one thing to consider the osmat will killl the pump after 10 minutes. Since you may need to drip the Kalk into the tank slowly you may find that any large swings in water level may take longer then 10 minutes to correct.

I run the osmat through a RATZ kalk reactor and in general works very well but occasionaly when the sump levels drops or the skimmer kicks in I need to reset the osmat as it has stopped the pump due to the 10 minute timer.

I have now got two feed 12v pumps on the osmat with each one being switched to kick in at a specific time through a relay on a timer. This allows KALK to be added at night and normal water during lights on.

blgreef- Where did you get a RATZ Nilsen Reactor?- sounds like your my kind of aquarist. I can imagine the relay timer set is fairly simple but I am planning a similar set for my shop so we dispense saltwater during the day- bagging stuff and freshwater at night- top off- any suggestions. I was planning on using a simple relay- some LED indicators and a nice project box I saw at Fry's- I was looking into timing chips and making a board so I could keep the whole circuit low voltage- how did you do it?

i kept it simple for now but will clean it up at a later date,.

Since I use the 12v pumps I have just a 12 transformer on a timer that drives 12 volts to a double pole relay that switches the 12v volts from the osmat to one of the pumps..

So when the timer turns the transformer on, it switches the relay and kicks in the other pump
The relay sits on a small vero board that I have encased in the glue used for those hot glue guns. not very servicable but if it fails I will chuck and build another .

A trial run!

I know you can get LCD clock modules that offer a timed output add this to a relay card and you would have a simple system.

With regards to the RATZ i live in europe and common over here, uses a power head in the reactor. The good thing about it is its a sealed unit just like a Calcium reactor so there is no chance of a leak even if you slightly pressurize it

;)

works great so far.

Is there any way to increase the timer function on the osmat to say 20 minutes, I assume the time value is set by an Resitor capcitor pair on a timer chip??

You are correct on the timer function but unfortunately the components that run it are miniaturized surface mount and I have had only "luck" in repairing one. It is near impossible to hold tweezers, solder, run a micro point on an iron at low heat and manage to not screw up the board- not recommended. I had a customer get some saltwater and it just happened to hit these miniature components and the timing was all out of wack- sometimes seconds, sometimes never and luck was all it was in fixing that one.

Played with these component when I was fixing audio etc, pain in the Ar$$ even with the right equipment. Looks like I will leave well enough alone. OK must find something else to tinker with:D

how is or how was Germany not sure if you are back yet?

Haven't left yet- April 29th- May8th. It sounds like it will be great. So far I will work in tha factory a few days- test some new products, work on the new catalogue. Go hiking in the alps, go swimming. With any luck I will tour the Mercedes factory, something I have always wanted to see, I am a huge fan of Mercedes automobiles, the attention to quality and detail are superb. We will likely also visit the Deutches Science Museum which is a regular stop- a good source of inspiration and ideas and an amazing testament to the human spirit seeing all the innovations of those who bravely escaped Eastern Europe. I really look forward to it. I will post a report when I return.
