OT: Amazing Golden Retriever

I've always loved this breed of dog...they are certainly in the running for the most intelligent, gentlest and most loving. Both my goldens have been so gentle with my grandchildren, even when they were infants. My golden, Bailey, takes great care of our Yorkie, Guppy, and will even come get me if Guppy needs to go outside, or herds him to the door when it's time to come in.

This video is amazing and goes to show how intelligent our furry friends are and how much love and respect they deserve. I bet the best part of the whole performance for Rookie was the big hug at the end. Thanks Mac for sending this along...gotta love it!

I have to admit I first thought it was going to be goofy or stupid when I saw it was a dog dancing. But I have to admit, that is one awesome dog. Now if I can just teach my wifes Chihuahua to behave I'd be set.

Lol, not likely, although both he and Guppy are going to be certified as Therapy Dogs. Bailey has all the training...but Guppy needs some work yet. I want to visit Children's Hospital. Both dogs love kids and I've always volunteered with kids...so this would be a perfect match for me and them. Just need to find the time!

That sounds awesome. It's nice to hear about people giving to their community.
I still say, Marcye, Bailey, and Guppy could make one heck of a dance team.

That's awesome Marcye. Although I have to say I know a lot of Golden trainers, owners and handlers and Goldens are very trainable because they're not very smart. The smarter the dog, the more difficult they typically are to train. ;)

If you need info on therapy dog certification, I can point you in the direction of where the Delta Society regularly holds testing locally.
I have a Chow/Aussie Shepard mix that has already received his AKC CGC and with a little work could get his therapy dog certification as well. Now I have my hands full with a Flat Coat Retriever pup that I'm getting ready for the show ring as well as obedience and agility. :eek2:

Good luck with them. I think it's great to be able to give back to the community like that. It's so neat to see the faces of people that get a visit from our furry friends.

Thanks for the cool video. Carole your nickname is apparently now Mac :):)

Does anyone know of any places locally that will certify cats to be therapy animals? One of mine is absolutely perfect for it but when I last looked into it there was something preventing me from doing it. It has been maybe a year or two but it is something I still want to do. I have a cat that is extremely good with people and very molestable. I think the fact he weighs like 20 lbs has to do with it. Maybe we can train him to work with Bailey and Guppy and have a little 3 ring circus ;p

Beautiful dog Marcie. I haven't been able to bring myself to getting a new dog since my Rotti passed of old age 4 years ago, but your video sure has me itching to find one lol.

Thanks, Dugg! We went through the same thing when our golden Sophie passed. It was just heart wrenching and we still miss her, but having Bailey and Guppy really helped us move on.

Carole, yes I remember getting that from you also a while back. I just got it again the other day from Mac and that' what prompted me to post. Just something fun and different for a change:)

I understand the thoughts behind the intelligence thing, but I do believe that goldens are extremely intelligent. For example, Guppy fell in the pool a few weeks ago and before I could get to him Bailey jumped in, grabbed him and hauled him out. Now, whenever Guppy goes near the pool, Bailey gets alongside him on the pool side and "herds" him away. None of that is training, perhaps instinct, but surely intelligence. Either way, goldens are incredible dogs as are so many other breeds. I guess I'm just partial since I've had several and am constantly amazed at their ability to anticipate and react.

Marcye, that's super cool you have a poolside lifeguard. I would chalk that up to the natural instinct of a retriever. Guppy was in the water and Bailey did exactly what he was bread to do, retrieve. It just so happens instead of waterfowl, it was a terrier. :D

I'm not saying goldens are the dumbest dogs in the world, but try to train/handle a parson russell or any terrier or better yet a herding dog. They're bread to think for themselves, and can be quite a handful to train.:)

No matter what, I applaud you for putting forth the effort and time you have with your dogs. It's a lot of work.

I had a Doberman, Prince who used to do that, he was waaayyyy too smart with the tricks he learned and he was the best frisby (sp) player as well, his brother, Barron was a dumb as a box of rocks, he would chase Prince when Prince was chasing the frisby.
Marcye, Bailey and Guppy are too beautiful!!

Have you tried the Delta Society's Pet Partners Program ? The training center (in Sanford) where I teach hosts Delta Society testing every month or two. I know that the program certifies a variety of animals including dogs, cats, rabbits, a variety of birds, etc. though I've only seen dogs at our center. They may have different evaluators and locations for different species...

Regards,
Heather

Thanks, Heather. That's the program I've been referred to. Hopefully I'll be able to get some free time soon to get the certification.

Thanks Heather I will have to check it out! While dogs are awesome, I don't think cats get enough street cred :) Mine have me trained!
