OT- Cablevision

They just changed the rules again. Now, a cable ready TV is no longer good enough. To get a picture, you need a cable box (at $10.00/month) for each TV. Top that with the now third dispute between Cablevision and a network that cost the consumer the ability to watch programming they have gotten used to, and I'm ready to throw them out.
I have everything through Cablevision now, TV, 'Net and phone. If it weren't for the email addy, the choice would be simple, go with FIOS. I'm at the point now where the difficulty of dealing with a new primary email addy looks worthwhile.
What are you guys doing for TV and 'Net? Is there a way around the $10/month box for each TV?

Unfortunately I'm in the same boat as you, got cablevision for everything. This whole fox thing has really made me sick, with all the money we spend a month they have the nerve not to sign a contract with FOX, one of the most watched channels out there because they want a little more money.It's cablevisions duty to bring us these channels. It's ridiculous. I mean it was one thing when this happened with HGTV and food network, yea it was annoying but not nearly as much of an inconvenience as not having fox. When I move to the new house in a few weeks I'm seriously considering switching.

Don't blame Cablevision for this. They wanted to go into binding arbitration to settle this, Fox 5 parent company says no. Cablevision is trying to hold costs so I dont have to pay more. I am so sick of these networks trying to rip me off. I pay for their service and I get to watch their commercials. I have 400 other channels to watch goodby fox 5.

I wouldn't be so fast to say Cablevision is not to blame, how did Verizon, Dish and DirecTV all get past this without incident? I have yet to see any other carrier other than Cablevision have problems with every channel, remember ABC was off the lineup for a few days as well.

Larry, I've been with Verizon for a few years and am very happy. While they do charge for the STB it's only 4.95 (or was before I went HD). The HD-DVR is 12.95 so at least I feel like I'm getting something for the money. Plus subtle differences, guide comes up in seconds not minutes, if you get HBO you get HBO on demand not another $5. When I was with Cable the image got 'blocky' due to weak digital signal, never had that with FIOS; picture is so much clearer. I get the NFL Network, not even an option on cable but the flip side is no MSG-HD or News 12 but not an issue for me. Only down side is no PIP with the Motorola STB. Internet seems faster, especially at night. No more sharing the bandwidth with the rest of the neighborhood plus Verizon also gives you a wireless router.

On a side note with the Fox issue, if you have a digital TV all you need is an antenna to pick up the Fox HD signal for free along with CBS, NBC and ABC; a few others as well so if your a basic channel watcher no real need for any of them.

Cablevision has been a monopoly for a very long time, and I have been paying through the nose for their service. I don't believe that they're fighting with Fox to keep MY cost down, my cost has been UP for what, 25 years or more?
They charge $10.00/month to rent a box that they are probably paying less than $20.00 for. When they found a way to make that box better (DVR), they didn't give me the new technology for the same $10/mo, they DOUBLED the price. I have 4 TVs, 2 with a regular cable box, 1 with DVR, and 1 that doesn't work any longer, because Mr. Dolan has found a way to make me NEED one of his boxes to make it work. I'm paying $40./month for rent on cable boxes, and now they want another $10/mo from me!
Cablevision = thievery, and this Fox 5/My 9 thing is the last straw.

I'm looking at FIOS, Joe. If I change, I don't want a dish on my house, so FIOS is really the only option. The thing is, they are not cheaper than Cablevision, they're more expensive. At least they're more expensive for better service. I have a lot of pixilation and freezing problems with Cablevision, and their main selling point is News 12. I can live without News 12, I haven't watched their broadcast since Mr. Dolan refused to allow the anchors to wear American flag pins on their lapels after 9/11........

I have been paying cablevision almost $300 a month for 3 years now. PArt of that is due to my wife's parents renting the downstairs from us. We also have all three services.

In our place we have 2 boxes, phone, internet and a DVR.
Downstairs is 3 boxes, one DVR, an additional phone line and a spanish channel package.

For some reason we don't even get every channel on every box. One box will get certain channels and not others and another box will get some channels and not others. There's no rhyme or reason to it. I've called them and they've tested things on their end and everything is fine. I've had people come out and they always say the problem is on my end. I've bought new cables, powered down boxes and I can never get everything to work.

Oh, and we can't get FIOS here in Brookhaven either.

Was paying $85 for Fios phone/internet and $145 for Dish tv(3 boxes and international programming) so that was $230 each month. Now with cablevision I'm paying $105 for 3 box/phone/internet. Can't beat that or complain even if I don't get Fox for 1 month. Its obvious that Fios has greater speeds and picture quality, but right now its about most bang for the buck.

Verizon had issues with some networks a few years ago, this just happens to be the year that cablevision is renewing their contracts. You can watch TV without the box, you just have a limited number of channels you can see, 1-13 I think. I did some reading on the fox issue, I am with cablevision on this one, they were looking for a lot more money compared to their last contract. I pay $145 a month for TV (one box), internet and phone.

My cable ready TV without the box is not getting anything but a notice that I now need a box to see anything other than the notice. They are able to broadcast that, but keeping me from using the service I pay for without renting their equipment.
Let's not forget the last twon contract problems Cablevision had. Food network/HGTV (I was not really all that bothered by that one) and channel 7 on Grammy night. Is the consumer expected to continue paying as they negotiate new deals with every network, and not be able to access those networks while the negotiations go on?
Cablevision is selling me something I'm not getting, and I'm beyond fed up with it at this point.

Thats proabably true after 2 years, but for the 2 years I have the promotion going I'll be saving the $230 I was originally spending before through Fios and Dish.
In the same week, while Cablevision is negotiating a new contract with FOX's parent company, Dish Network is negotiating a new contract with Cablevision for all related MSG programming. When I made the switch it had been over a week that MSG was blocked. Dish is blaming Cablevision for being greedy/demanding a large amount, at the same time Cablevision is blaming Fox network for being greedy. No one company is different from the other. They all want to come out of the deal as winners and could careless if we are out of service for the service we pay for.

That's for sure. A few months ago my wife dropped off our payment at the local office. They forgot to credit our account, even though they cashed the check. Since they forgot to credit our account, they thought we were past due and cut service. We got it straightened out when we could prove we payed and they cashed the check, but we were out a days service. Naturally they refused to credit us for the day :uzi:

Well in reality Fox is part of "broadcast basic" (1-13 and a few other random channels) which is $15 a month by itself. One channel out of that is probably worth $1 a month, maybe less.
