they taste more like chips. just like the deep fried worms that i ate while i was in thailand

Such fond memories... I moved away from Libertyville 10 years ago but I clearly remember the last swarm. My sister was graduating from high school and the ceremony was held at Ravinia. There were so many crunchy shells of bugs everywhere. The kids were throwing them. There were easily as many bug skins in the air as there were graduation caps. I can't believe it has been 17 years.

None in Central Naperville either. I was thinking that I might not see many around the neighborhood considering almost everybody around here has used some sort of insecticide on their lawns in the past 16 years.

I was reading about them and I guess they spend their larval stage at depths of 1-8.5 feet underground, which might protect them from insecticides, but not when they are trying to emerge from the ground. Anyone have any idea how long grub killer stays active and how deep into the soil it penetrates?

It just occurred to me, that my house was about 3 years old the last time the cicadas were about, so the moderately large trees in the neighborhood would have been very small twigs then.

I'm going camping this weekend in southern Illinois. I'm betting we see/hear a bunch of cicadas. I'm just hoping they let us sleep at night.

the males only make noise during the day when finding a mate. there are yearly cicadas that make noise at night.

Soup's On!!

Soup's On!!

Went to Brookfield today - The g/f wanted to go to the zoo. Well the zoo was so packed, we skipped it.

On the way thought, we noticed the trees were loaded with cicadas so we stopped and shot some pics.

Also picked up a bunch for cooking - Who's got recipes?

I'm thinking wontons, tacos, pralines. I saw a news segment where they made sushi. I also thought that cicada's sauteed first then splashed with lime juice and a little chili powder or red pepper would be good.

Thoughts?
