OT - Diving Board Fun

I took some pictures of my boys jumping in the pool on Saturday. We've done this before but this was the first time I took the shots at dusk. I'm pretty happy with the way they turned out.

Looks good. You really got the pictures nice and sharp.

What kind of lighting were you using? That certainly isnt an on camera flash ;)

Thanks everyone.

Recty, I used two flashes, a Canon 580EX and a Vivitar 285HV. One was basically facing them from near the shallow end of the pool and the other was behind them at roughly a 45 degree angle. Both were set at 1/2 power and triggered with Pocket Wizards.

Those are great. Curious, did you dry their hair before each shot? They all look like it's dry except maybe shot #6. Good lighting, did you use the on camera flash?

No, we didn't dry their hair between jumps. They were just going from the pool to the diving board. They both wear their hair fairly short so that might be why it looks dry.

The lighting was from two remote flashes, one near the shallow end and one near the deep end. I was shooting with my 5D Mark II which doesn't have a built in flash, since I don't have a third flash at the moment no on camera flash was used. :)

Thanks!

nice use of the light/flash. That is an art in and of itself, and admitedly one I know little about. Though, I do know enough to always set the exp compenation down when I use my EX480. If you're gonna do people though it makes all the differance in the world. Good job.

Excellent info. Did the flashes units get splashed and wet?

No, they were far and high enough that they didn't get splashed at all. The light stands might have gotten a few drops near the bottom, but that was about it.

A little additional info since there seems to be some interest: I was shooting at ISO 160 at the beginning and moved to 200 as the light started to fade. All were shot at f/2.8 with a shutter speed of 1/200 (the max sync speed of the 5D). The idea was to expose for the level I wanted the background to be at, which was intentionally underexposed so that the boys would "pop" in the images.

During the day the shutter speed of 1/200 obviously would have been too slow and they would have looked blurry (unless you pan extremely well). The boys are sharp in these photos because the flash has a very short duration and "freezes" the action.
