OT: Ohio gun laws?

I have recently moved here (to Ohio) from Florida and today a friend asked me if I had registered my guns. Being from Florida, where anyone who has not been legally restricted from purchasing a gun may do so without applying for a license, I did not think of it.

My question is this.

Do you have to register to own a firearm in the state of Ohio?

Thought it would be easier to ask here than navigate through the governments website for an answer.

Thanks

Welcome to Ohio. I have never heard of registering guns unless the local law enforcement has their own restrictions. My father in-law had to register his in their county of PA but that was the first time I had heard of it.

What part of FL are you from? I moved from the Fort Myers area to Northeast OH in 1993. I still get weird looks when I mention moving from Florida TO OHIO

No registration, but you need to take a CCW class to carry, If you want a name and number for a 2 day cheap CCW class PM me and I will send you to the guy I took my class with, 1st day was an 8 hour course on the laws and the 2nd day was 2 hours at the range. And Im pretty sure that you can hit a 9 inch paper plate at 15 feet, so you should have no problem... I think it cost $50 for it....

Thanks for the replies!

I also used to live in Illinois where you need a FOID card (Firearms Ownership ID) in order to own guns, but you don't have to register individual guns.

Yes, Florida has the same CCW laws.

I may take you up on that JBMynes in a few weeks when my wallet recovers from Christmas! Last time I was at a range, I emptied 2 clips into a standard 9-inch target at 50 feet in under 15 seconds using my 45 so at 15 feet should not be a problem!!

itZme....I am coming from Orlando. I know all about the strange looks. I was telling people I am moving from Orlando TO Youngstown, OH and they think I am nuts....but that is where the job was.

Thanks again for the replies!!!

To conceal you need a permit. To open carry is TOTALLY LEGAL. Say you wanted to walk around your new neighborhood, you have every right to carry your gun in a holster, as long as it is not covered in any way. Either tuck your shirt in, or tuck that part of your shirt behind the gun. You might get stopped, but the law and constitution is behind you. Here's is the code for violation of your rights, it's posted above and here again. http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/42/usc_sec_42_00001983----000-.html

I wouldn't try that with my luck I would get some new cop that responds to a guy walking around with a gun just doesn't sound like it is going to turn out ok.

besides even if you accidently touched it around people that can be a felony if they want to push it. You might win in court but it is going to cost you.

It's legal, and laws have changed since the orignal carry laws sucked... The classes go over all the stupid things and people are working to make the laws even better than they were...
